Great review books for step 1

Great review books for step 1. Especially Biochemistry, Microbiology and Immunology, Pharmacology and Physiology are great. It contains all the high yield information. Compared to first aid these book offer a lot more information for understanding concepts.
I didn't use a book for behavioral sciences, just did questions. Embryology is good but for Anatomy I definitely recommend a book that has more pictures. The concept of the pathology part was not for me either so I used pathoma instead.

Fantastic Textbook Primer on Package Design

This is one of the best books on package design I've seen in many years.

Whether you are a student, junior designer, marketing professional, advertising executive, brand manager - or, anyone who will play any role in the package design process - this is a must-have reference. It should be required reading for the same list.

I am founder and principal of my own package design firm for more than 25 years. Even so, this is a refreshing reminder of the "how and why" of what we do.

The writing is to-the-point and without much of the useless design-speak one might expect. With high-quality images the book covers the entire process, reasoning and importance of packaging. Examples range from big-picture concepts to required details.

I was required to purchase this book for my package design course at my university and I am real impressed with the layout and information in this book. The photography is excellent and the book contains Q/A interviews with famous designers which turn out to be very interesting and helpful. The price on Amazon was cheaper than at my university bookstore so I am happy.

I had to buy this for a packaging design class, and was happily surprised by how informative yet fun it is. It could ALMOST even a coffee table book, because it's not that thick, has a pretty cover and is interesting. It helped me out in my final portfolio preparation too, because it gave me really good advice and ideas for how to create a portfolio for my designs. Good book!!

Pretty good book

Very good book. I had bought her book on how to embellish bras and I think the instructions in this book about the same thing is alot easier to understand (re: pattern making for the bra)...Great overview on the history of Bellydance costume. Overall alot of good tips on costuming and it really helps in terms of making or purchasing an ensemble to work best with your own body type. Hows on emphasizing or de-emphasizing areas of the body. Also, with the historic background it helps to chose something to best fit what type of bellydance you will be learning.

Very good read for quick history and basic design concepts

This book has been written with the view of helping people that are just starting out with designing their own decorated bra-and-belt bellydance sets. It begins with a brief overview of various costume styles (both traditional and modern) and the key features within them; then goes into more detail about designing the beaded and sequined bras and belts; and finishes with a section about what to do for the rest of the costume (garments and accessories).

The techniques described are fairly basic and are explained in language that is easy to understand. I have a background in design, fashion and dressmaking, and bought this book as an added aid for designing costumes for my dancing. Although the techniqes may not be as advanced as others out there, it is well worth the read and a great tool for anyone who needs help with their costumes - I will certainly be refering to it in the future.

Overall, a very well-written and concise book about designing bellydance costumes.

Challenged by Hope

I have devoted most of my life to the quest for justice, the path has been beset by victory and loss, hope and frustration. I often find myself contending with a deep awareness that too many of us - including the radicals and do-gooders that I count among my friends - including my own self! All of us seem to be stuck in a paradigm that has reached a dead end. And yet it is all we know. And so we give our hearts and our passion, our energy and life force to a process that often seems doomed.

I have had the privilege of participating in some of the learning journeys beautifully described in this Frieze and Wheatley book. I can honestly tell you that they bring us as close as we can get to the experience without actually being there. What is beautiful about the book is that it brings the reader to that place of hope and upheaval that one experiences on a learning journey. We get to witness phenomenally hopeful responses to injustice and despair. Bold, autonomous, real walk outs from a system that is broken.

The reader is filled with a sense of deep human solidarity, a sense of pride in what these people can accomplish, a sense of hope in our shared capacity to walk out and walk on to something better, something new and something that is fundamentally good. But this does not happen without being beset by the nagging questions of scale, the questions of where is policy change? Where is the state? Isn't all of this just quaint - cute, beautiful but exceptional - irreplicable. We have to come up against the core assumptions of the dominant approach. And if you are a do-gooder, you have to come up against the core assumptions of your own approach.

It is not an easy process, and the conclusion is not forgone. But if you think that something is not working, not even with your own approach to change and social transformation, if you think that our humanity is in need of something else, then these walk outs are onto something, and they seem to be walking on to a very powerful place.

Fascinating but unrealistic

A pretty good read that is somewhat akin to the concepts in "Cultivating Communities of Practice" (http://www.amazon.com/Cultivating-Communities-Practice-Etienne-Wenger/dp/1578513308), putting them into narrative form. The authors write about their journeys to communities around the world - in places like Zimbabwe, India, and Mexico - and their experience with communities that are breaking the mold and finding their own creative, group-based solutions to problems. These people have "walked out" of the systems that aren't working and have "walked on" to help create their own future and solutions (thus the name of the book, "Walk Out, Walk On," a phrase that is actually used very sparsely in the book itself). The book contains actual pictures of the places/people talked about the authors try to paint a vivid picture of the communities they encounter. The point of the book is that these kinds of community-based, creative solutions come about organically and are not imposed or transplanted. The authors spend a good portion of the book criticizing the West for being a know-it-all and importing solutions into other countries and communities that have ended up causing more harm "e.g., the Green Revolution." Their point is argued very convincingly, but they use a pretty condescending tone (as other reviewers have noted) and don't seem to recognize that the communities about which they write represent the exception, not the rule. As many books tend to do, the authors write about fascinating exceptions and then create a whole new, over-arching mental framework for the rest of life from these exceptions. In this case, the authors witness these fascinating, community-based solutions in different spots of the world, and then conclude that the answer to poverty and other problems is the impoverished community itself coming up with its own solution. They seem to argue that the worst thing we can do is try to come in and help and impose our own solutions, but they forget that the vast majority of poor communities have NOT come up with their own solutions nor do they seem motivated or able to do so. Nevertheless, the authors make some very powerful observations about the nature of leadership and community, and the stories they tell are definitely interesting. this book contains the seeds of the future

Sitting around fretting about the future of the human race is a favorite modern activity. Too many people, not enough food, climate change, not enough of this, too much of that. Most of the solutions being offered by development bankers, politicians, economists, and scientists merely shift problems from one place to another, postpone the day of reckoning, and/or create fragile interdependences that are certain to end badly, especially for the poor.

High-tech "silver bullets", like miraculous new sources of energy, won't solve the problems. Even if we do manage to create such new technologies, they are all too likely to perpetuate the status quo wherein the rich get richer, the poor get poorer, and indigenous people lose their land.

Deborah Frieze and Margaret Wheatley have boldly created a window into something different.

Read this book to hear inspiring stories about people who step forward, people who are personally invested in the problems being solved and who work together; and about communities that exchange ideas with other communities as peers, rather than having short-sighted non-solutions handed down to them from a distance.

Using these stories as a starting point, Walk Out Walk On captures insights about change better than anything else I've read. It is like going on your own learning journey, with these two very wise guides.

I hope that by reading this book, others will be inspired, and the gears of change will start turning.
