Robotics: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions), by Alan Winfield

Robotics is a key technology in the modern world, a well-established part of manufacturing and warehouse automation, assembling cars or washing machines, or moving goods to and from storage racks for Internet mail order. Robots have taken their first steps into homes and hospitals, and have seen spectacular success in planetary exploration. Yet despite these successes, robots have failed to live up to the predictions of the 1950s and 60s, when it was widely thought--by scientists as well as the public--that we would have, by now, intelligent robots as butlers, companions, or co-workers. This Very Short Introduction explains how it is that robotics can be both a success story and a disappointment, and how robots can be both ordinary and remarkable. Alan Winfield introduces the subject by looking at the parts that together make a robot. Not surprisingly, these parts each have a biological equivalent: a robot's camera is like an animal's eyes, a robot's microcomputer is equivalent to an animal's brain, and so on. By introducing robots in this way this book builds a conceptual, non-technical picture of what a robot is, how it works, and how "intelligent" it is.

Good, realistic introduction (4.33 stars or so)
By A. J. Sutter
I read this book while in the early stages of preparing an undergraduate course on the law, ethics and social impact of robots. My objective was to find a short book to use as a recommended or even required background reading, so that students could get some very simple technical foundations and learn some useful distinctions, e.g. among different types of robots, between robots and AI, among different degrees of autonomy, etc.

I think this book fills the bill admirably. It's got a nice balance between the current state of the art and possible futures, with an admirable sense of restraint. Whereas some legal scholars are already jumping the shark and arguing for civil rights for AI (e.g., Chopra & White's "Legal Theory for Autonomous Artificial Agents" (2012)), this book emphasizes that we're a long way from there. At the same time, it makes it easy to imagine practical situations where the behavior of robots could have social ramifications between now and 20 or so years into the future.

The emphasis is on the engineering aspects, and especially helping the reader imagine the basic specification for what kind of systems a robot would need, e.g. to fetch you a glass of water. Most non-engineers aren't used to thinking that way -- there's a tendency to jump directly to visualizing machines doing human-like things, without appreciating the layers of complexity those behaviors entail -- so this will be a good mind-opener for many readers. The level of exposition is very gentle and down-to-earth (though I think some parts of Chapter 5, on swarm robots and evolutionary algorithms, might be a little dry for the uninitiated). While social, cultural and economic impacts of robots aren't the main focus of this book, it does touch on ethical issues, including a brief but nice critique of Asimov's Three Laws. That makes the book a useful bridge to deeper exploration of the related social issues.

The main negative is that the "Further reading" section is considerably shorter than in some other Very Short Introductions, and in its brief span mixes some good items with the occasional clinker, such as Eric Drexler's popular book on nanobots (which are neither addressed in the main text, nor as physically viable as Drexler made them seem). Still, this book should provide good introductory background not only for social science undergrads, but also for general readers: a worthy addition to the VSI series.

A very good introductory book
By John A. Fornshell
I bought this book for my grandson. He is a very good first year high school student and found it to be both interesting and educational.

Good book for those who know nothing about Robotics.
By Michael D Johnson
I felt the first part of the book was better then the last part when he started to talking about the future of robotics. But then again the things he was saying about the future I am starting to see in the new papers.. I guess I would have liked more hands, it really is a "Very Short Introduction".
