NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE STARRING JEREMY IRONS AND DEV PATEL!

In 1913, a young unschooled Indian clerk wrote a letter to G H Hardy, begging the preeminent English mathematician's opinion on several ideas he had about numbers. Realizing the letter was the work of a genius, Hardy arranged for Srinivasa Ramanujan to come to England. Thus began one of the most improbable and productive collaborations ever chronicled. With a passion for rich and evocative detail, Robert Kanigel takes us from the temples and slums of Madras to the courts and chapels of Cambridge University, where the devout Hindu Ramanujan, 'the Prince of Intuition,' tested his brilliant theories alongside the sophisticated and eccentric Hardy, 'the Apostle of Proof.' In time, Ramanujan's creative intensity took its toll: he died at the age of thirty-two and left behind a magical and inspired legacy that is still being plumbed for its secrets today.

From Publishers Weekly
This moving and astonishing biography tells the improbable story of India-born Srinavasa Ramanujan Iyengar, self-taught mathematical prodigy. In 1913 Ramanujan, a 25-year-old clerk who had flunked out of two colleges, wrote a letter filled with startlingly original theorems to eminent English mathematician G. H. Hardy. Struck by the Indian's genius, Hardy, member of the Cambridge Apostles and an obsessive cricket aficionado, brought Ramanujan to England. Over the next five years, the vegetarian Brahmin who claimed his discoveries were revealed to him by a Hindu goddess turned out influential mathematical propositions. Cut off from his young Indian wife left at home and emotionally neglected by fatherly yet aloof Hardy, Ramanujan returned to India in 1919, depressed, sullen and quarrelsome; he died one year later of tuberculosis. Kanigel ( Apprentice to Genius ) gives nontechnical readers the flavor of how Ramanujan arrived at his mathematical ideas, which are used today in cosmology and computer science. From Library Journal
This biography traces the life of one of the greatest geniuses of the 20th century, Ramanujan. This incredibly brilliant Indian mathematician, working alone in relative obscurity and lacking the usual academic credentials, could easily have passed unnoticed. However, with the help of a handful of friends and the ultimate support of renowned English mathematician G.H. Hardy, his work was brought to the attention of the world. When he died in 1920 at 32 he had become a folk-hero in his own country. He left a rich lode of original mathematics, which is still being mined today. This extremely well-researched and well-written biography is a "must" addition to any library collection.

Stunning Portrayal of Genius
By PaleShadow
Stunning Portrayal of the Genius Ramanujan. Would Cambridge Mathematics professors be Jealous of a man who could finish up a new mathematical idea they were working on for months, in a matter of minutes ? They certainly would ! and they were jealous of Ramanujan, denying him as a fellow in their august society, until it was so obvious that he was another Euler or Newton, that they had no choice but to accept him. The Mathematician, G.H. Hardy, played brilliantly by Jeremy Irons, was made greater by his assistance of this God touched Math Wizard. Mathematics is very deep thought on the simplest ideas in the world, and it is this depth, this sense of Numerical Order and Lawfulness, that made Ramanujan pour out beautiful equations until almost his last breath. Many of these Equations will not find an application for hundreds of years. Of course in Mathematics, you can't just produce an equation or a nice series without Proving that it is in fact a truth statement. It was learning to do the rigor of proofs that slowed Ramanujan down in his zeal to give Hardy his heady jewels of symmetrical numerical wonder. But in the end, Ramanujan did learn the art of the Proof and was a published contributor to the deepest and most vast field of all...the Queen of the Sciences...Mathematics. I know, that if you have even a smidgen of respect for the Gifted among us, you will love this Film.

Engrossing biography of great Number Theorist Remanujan
By El Cid
Engrossing biography for anyone interested in the life of this notably mathematician.
Self taught in poverty he virtually reinvented centuries of math on his own.
Discovered by Cambridge Mathematician Hardy, he was torn from his native India to live a tragically short and lonely life in England.
Much of his work is still being delved into for rich new material in number theory.
He is viewed in India much as we view Einstein in America, but had half the lifetime to attain that prominence.

The fun here tends to infinity
By Roberto Rigolin Ferreira Lopes
"Like other great men he invented himself" said Hardy about this Ramanujan boy. What a boy! (we must emphasize). Self-born, self-willed, self-directed unorthodox genius failing several times to fit in the norm. Ah, the norm! Ramanujan was an extreme fluctuation from it, reusing Kanigel words, possessing stunning originality. This biography is also full of insights on mathematical concepts; the fun here tends to infinity.
