GREATEST book for cartoon faces and character design!

I just received my book in the mail today and my first impression was WOW!!! The cover alone is just fantastic, I mean look at all the reference cartoon faces on the front AND the back! I of course couldn't resist but to dig right in and see what else the book contained. Christopher Hart starts right off with defining the basics of how to develop the character depending on mood, age and wackiness. I am VERY impressed with what he has created here.
Christopher has taken time to detail the tiniest of details like eyes, ears and nose for example. (I submitted a photo of the nose section.) Not only does he give a simple step-by-step process but he outlines what to be careful NOT to do as well. I found this very helpful.
It feels like this could be the illustrated encyclopedia for cartoon faces and really people, not just faces. I think my favorite feature in the book is the "Character finder" reference page right before the Index. It is a series of pages with small thumbnail images of each of the Faces or Characters that Christopher has created throughout the entire book. (I submitted a photo I took of this section.) Each thumbnail has a page number referenced where you can find the character. This is EXTREMELY helpful for finding that one character that you need to find when you may not remember the page number.
It's like a glimpse into the mind of a creative genius, I HIGHLY recommend this book. To all skill levels, this book will help you get to your next level of creating cartoon characters, and cartoon faces specifically which is one of the most difficult things to do in character design.

Making Faces

Cartoon Faces, as the names suggests, is all about the drawing of humorous faces. It is rich in detail with clear instructions that will bring hours of drawing pleasure and a marked improvement in drawing skills for those new to cartooning.

Useable by about grade 4 and up, it is really for the serious student cartoonist seeking detailed information about taking their drawing to the next level and designing their own cartoon characters. Beginners would likely to be just as happy with Modern Cartooning. Reading level and the jokes suggest an audience of junior high level and up. That said the young beginner will find over 25 step-by-step cartoons in Cartoon Faces that are bound to improve their drawing skills. More advance cartoonist will find detailed instructions and numerous suggestions which are super useful in that it is often the small details that lifts a drawing out of the ordinary.

Chris starts with the cartoon head basics. This is followed by detailed instructions on: drawing each part of face, a close look at head shapes, exaggeration, face dynamics, hairstyles, the use of shading and highlights, and additional drawing exercises. The book is heavy on well illustrated instructional pictures and these are then put to use in carefully thought out, clear step-by-step cartoons of a wide variety of characters. Chris's approach is to develop the individual character to showcase the idea or expression. For example how do you show goofy as opposed to sleepy. I found the chapter on hairstyles particularly useful.

This is the not the sort of book that gets regulated to the book shelf instead you will find yourself constantly referring back to it while drawing your own characters.

There are two areas that Chris does not cover; villains and how to adapt a large number of facial expressions to the same character.

One interesting feature is a character finder consisting small pictures of each face and page numbers for more than 80 different faces. This index of pictures would be a useful feature in any art book.

As I have stated in other reviews of Chris Hart books, one of Chris's real strengths is the tie in of his books with Chris's YouTube channel. Both the channel and books reinforce each other as Chris demonstrates his drawing techniques in his YouTube videos. Unlike many drawing videos Chris goes through the entire process demonstrating the step-by-step process including all the erasing and changes needed to complete the drawing. This is combined with a running, often humorous, monologue as Chris explains both the what and the why of his drawing decisions. This modeling of technique can only benefit the student cartoonist as they can watch each video as often as they wish. Best yet there is a constantly supply of new videos. The channel is kid friendly.

So Cartoon Faces is highly recommend. I know my copy is getting a workout as I teach kids cartooning and work on my own cartoon projects.

Indexes, conversion charts, and tables are clearly presented and referenced. This text is outstanding in the extreme and should be a part of every students' personal library of X-ray/radiography reference work. My husband and I have recently completed school and are both thrilled with this text.

Better than Merrill's

Explains concepts more clearly, shows helpful pictures, and provides more information about which exams to use to rule out which pathologies. It looks great. Excellent organization and graphic design make a world of difference to visual-learners, which most of us are. Plus, it highlights in bold the important differences between procedures and the index is set up without 20 pages of listings under the heading "positioning" (!). Why is the Bontranger NOT the textbook of record???????

About the Author
Henk Tijms is Professor of Operations Research at the Vrije University in Amsterdam. The author of several textbooks, including A First Course in Stochastic Models, he is intensively active in the popularization of applied mathematics and probability in Dutch high schools. He has also written numerous papers on applied probability and stochastic optimization for international journals, including Applied Probability and Probability in the Engineering and International Sciences.

A great introductory probability book

Henk Tijms is one of the world's leading experts in applied probability. This book is a wonderful introduction to probability theory. The second half of book a requires basic differntial calculus but beyond that only high school algebra is required. First half of book motivates probabilistic thinking through many fascinating examples and problems. Second half of book fills in the rigor. What sets the book apart is that unlike most books every problem and example are interesting. Another excellent feature is the fact that simulation is used throughout to develop probabilistic inttiution. All in all a wonderful book.

I write textbooks in the field but several examples in the book (such as Poisson approximation to the famous birthday problem) taught me some new tricks!

Great intro to probability

I am a physician who uses probabilty and statistics in research and I am always interested in finding textbooks that are such effective teaching instruments that they are suitable for self-study. Unfortunately work has prevented me from finishing this book for now and so my comments are based on an incomplete reading of the book but my initial impression was positive and I thought it was worth sharing. But it is one of the best books I have found. It is a nice balance between mathematical rigor and expository writing and I very much appreciated historical anecdotes that come in handy when one wonders if one has what it takes to finish the book and master the subject-specifically how Leibniz had difficulty calculating the probability of rolling a certain number with dice. I was particularky impressed because I had a very negative impression of some of the "classics" that will remain unnamed that are undoubtedly super colelctions of information and concepts but rather poor vehicals of instruction. I have to admit that I definitely prefer a more expository style in which the author is really speaking to you. The "high-density" books are not for me. So I very much appreciated professor Tijms expository approach.

I could not put this book down. Working through the colorful problems in this book is a great way to learn and apply basic probability principles. I've have never seen a probability book with such good examples.

Harnessing the Technicolor Rainbow is the first scholarly history of Technicolor aesthetics and technology, as well as a thoroughgoing analysis of how color works in film. Scott Higgins draws on extensive primary research and close analysis of well-known movies, including Becky Sharp, A Star Is Born, Adventures of Robin Hood, and Gone with the Wind, to show how the Technicolor films of the 1930s forged enduring conventions for handling color in popular cinema. Outstanding even if outdated.

Although this book is about 20 years old and to my knowledge has not been released in an updated edition it is an excellent reference and still quite valid. I have Advanced Nutrition and Human Metabolism by Groff and Nutritional Biochemistry, by Brody, but I still prefer to refer to this book. So if you don't want to spend and exhorbitant amount of money and don't need the latest research which to some extent you can do yourself on the web, then look no further. You can pick this book up for less than $10.

The most influential book of my entire life

Nutritional Biochemistry, edited by Dr. M. Linder is an influential textbook. Some time ago, this book was provided to me for teaching a class of upper division students and graduate students in the field of nutrition. All of the students purchased this book. However, during the first week of teaching, it was apparent to me that the book was failing as a teaching device. The writing is clumsy. For example, concepts in metabolism are set forth by complicated diagrams with many arrows. These diagrams almost resemble topographical maps of mountain ranges. The Linder book is not alone in having this fault of attempting to "teach" a biochemical pathway by way of a complex diagram taking the form of multi-branched flow chart with ten to twenty arrows. Thus, my critique regarding this textbook "teaching" device is a general one.

Also, I noticed that many of the "facts" about chemistry, enzymology, metabolic pathways, regulation, and so on, were not correct. To reiterate this point, it is the case that the Linder book is filled with errors. And so, by the end of the week, I told my students that they could return the Linder book to the campus bookstore.

As a consequence, for each of the subsequent lectures for my course, I was forced to scramble for twelve solid hours to prepare each 1-hour lecture, and to draft accompanying handouts for my class. At the end of the semester, I had 400 pages of handouts. I submitted these to several publishers and my efforts were rewarded with contracts from three different publishing companies. I chose the best one (Academic Press). To make a long story short, a first edition and also a second edition of my nutrition book was published. And so, it can be seen that the Linder book turned out to be the most influential book in my life.

Sohel Akhter is a program management consultant, trainer, and an adjunct professor for City University of New York's MBA program. He is a top-level management professional with a distinguished management history of over fifteen years in information technology, networking, and software engineering within multiple industry settings.
Among Sohel's many other specialties are: PMO setup, WI MAX deployment, SAP implementation, strategic planning, business automation, and enterprise solution. Additionally, he has led many companies to success with his excellent project management skills, including banks, multinationals, SMB, IT service providers, and ISPs. He has also been the CTO in a large IT organization and has managed technical teams that consisted of over two hundred employees.
Sohel has been providing project management training, PMP certification exam prep boot camp, and PM consultancy globally for several years. He has conducted PM training and consultancy at various levels of organizations for senior management, implementation team members, and end users for US and other foreign companies. My number 1 ranked PMP study material

In studying for my PMP exam, I have examined and trail-studied many-many books; Trying to ultimately find one main book to study from, which would provide the most fluid information, and prepare me the most for the exam.

Sohel Akhter's book was by far the most fitting and my number one selection. I used this book as my main study material.

I like the Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification Exam prep, best mainly because of a few key reasons

1. Format
Format is set up so it flows orderly and set up with many visuals, so to help one better remember the concepts and points. This booked promoted better memorization for me

2. Content :
Content is very complete with detail and outlines areas of key importance. This allows one to understand both the "How-to" details, and operations of project management, while highlighting areas which are especially prone to be tested / asked in the exam...

3. Practice exercises
Exercises are set up very logical, and allow fundamental progression to occur. The explanations are the best and most complete which I have come across, and the practice exam section is questions just like the exam

I strongly recommend this book. It has helped me out tremendously and I believe it is the best material out there for PMP exam prep.

FYI - I also have the Cheat-Sheet,(PMP Quick Reference Guide) by the same author "Sohel Akhter" .... it is fantastic and a must as well. It outlines the most critical parts to know for the PMP exam and it is a great to help memorization.

An absolute value-add for a prospective PMP

This book is truly ‘the asset’ to help anyone clear the PMP exam, by focusing only on its contents – ‘end to end’, for one month. It does deliver all that it promises, it easies the PMP journey.
This book was my primary source of study for the PMP exam (beyond some sample questions on the internet). Now that I have cleared the PMP in my first attempt, I would recommend this book highly, as being the only source that is thoroughly focused in ensuring that it equips you with the right mix of contents, delivered in a clear concise format to pass the exam in the first attempt. The exam is tough and unconditionally demands the kind of focus that this book delivers. The sample questions in this book give a clear perspective of how the exam questions would be structured – this probably is the only source you would need if you want to get things right the first time.
Besides setting the exam perspective, it has many real world examples that would serve as high-quality reference material for actual project management.
I had attended the training course that the author of this book handled, in Dec 2013 and used his study materials. I got this book which the author recommended to me in Mar 2014 for the practice questions. I studied this book end to end and ensured that I solved all the sample questions including the 200 sample exam questions included at the end of this book. It was all totally worth it!

The Indept PMP Exam Prep Manual

Prior to purchasing this book, I read through Andy Crowe's "The PMP Exam". Although Andy's book have a lot of good information regarding the PMP exam, Sohel Akhter's book offers more information and details not only about what is required to pass the PMP exam but also how to be a Professional Project Manager. This these reasons, I highly recommend Akhter's Project Management Professional Exam prep. In addition, the questions at the end of each chapter are challenging. Happy reading fellow managers.
