Collage City (MIT Press), by Colin Rowe, Prof Fred Koetter

This book is a critical reappraisal of contemporary theories of urban planning and design and of the role of the architect-planner in an urban context. The authors, rejecting the grand utopian visions of "total planning" and "total design," propose instead a "collage city" which can accommodate a whole range of utopias in miniature.

Review

Coming upon this book in rather a skeptical state of mind, I must say I found it intriguing, enlightening, brilliant, witty, and exasperating as it pursued its thesis with a species of grammatical acrobatics that I can only call arresting. This is a book about the ideologies of modern architecture, their philosophical origins, their manifestations, and the ways in which they are flawed. It is a book about architects who had and have conceptions about the ideal city, and it tries to reorient those conceptions from the utopia of a single vision to a more multivalent view of city form.

Difficult, opaque, frustrating, but important
By J. V. Lewis
I am a second-generation Rowe disciple, I guess. I studied with a Rowe acolyte in graduate school and worked with co-author Fred Koetter in an urban design studio. Without the efforts these teachers have made to bring Rowe's ideas to urban design students, they may well have been neglected, because Collage City is a mess. It is badly marred by dense thickets of poorly-edited, idiosyncratic prose. It was one of the more frustrating books I had to read in school, but I'm glad it was required, because the close readings uncovered real gems of theory. Rowe reintroduced the complexities and possibilities of art into urban design right at the peak of Modernism's influence. Architecture was still in the thrall of La Ville Radieuse and socialist-utopian projects that aimed to simplify and disinfect cities. Jane Jacobs saw the social perils of these projects, Colin Rowe saw the architectural perils. His critique of the Modern project was among the most powerful, and among the least cogent. Still, though it requires some serious digging in prose-mud, the gems are there and worth the search. I recommend this book for graduate-level urban theorists or serious urban design students.

But there are more accessible urban design primers: Aldo Rossi, et al, The Architecture of the City, for example, covers much of the same ground Rowe so spottily tilled [except where Eisenman is involved in the book: he is a worse prose-stylist than Rowe]. For non-specialists I also recommend Witold Rybczynski's City Life as a thoughtful and LUCID introduction to American urbanism, along with a critique of the last few decades of urban "development".

Tales of the Peculiar, by Ransom Riggs

A companion to the New York Times bestselling Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, now a major motion picture directed by Tim Burton.

Before Miss Peregrine gave them a home, the story of peculiars was written in the Tales.

Wealthy cannibals who dine on the discarded limbs of peculiars. A fork-tongued princess. These are but a few of the truly brilliant stories in Tales of the Peculiar—the collection of fairy tales known to hide information about the peculiar world, including clues to the locations of time loops—first introduced by Ransom Riggs in his #1 bestselling Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children series.

Riggs now invites you to share his secrets of peculiar history, with a collection of original stories in this deluxe volume of Tales of the Peculiar, as collected and annotated by Millard Nullings, ward of Miss Peregrine and scholar of all things peculiar. Featuring stunning illustrations from world-renowned woodcut artist Andrew Davidson this compelling and truly peculiar anthology is the perfect gift for not only fans, but for all booklovers.

A perfect gift, reminiscent of classic bookmaking, this beautifully packaged volume features full-page woodcut illustrations, gold foil stamping, a ribbon, and removable back sticker.

From School Library Journal
Gr 6 Up—Riggs gives fans of his "Miss Peregrine" trilogy a history lesson of sorts in 10 short stories that provide a glimpse into the fascinating past of peculiars and Peculiardom. These fables seem familiar yet completely new, touching on themes and subjects that populate classic myths and legends. For example, the famous phrase no man is an island, entire of itself takes on a completely different meaning for one peculiar. The tales are presented as written records of known stories passed down from generation to generation, collected and presented by Millard Nullings, Esq., EdD, MBCh (one of Miss Peregrine's children from the original books), with footnotes that fill in historical details. The pieces predate the use of photography, so instead of employing the intriguing and mysterious found photographs featured in past works, Riggs relies on beautifully detailed illustrations that capture another time and place. The stories center on characters who are different, who don't fit in, who aren't accepted by those around them, and who overcome these challenges and come to embrace who they truly are. VERDICT For fans of the past books, this volume will provide new insight into many of the events in Peculiar history. It is also a perfect gateway for new readers to enter the world Riggs has created. Recommended for all libraries.—Billy Parrott, New York Public Library

Andrew Davidson graduated from the Royal College of Art with a Masters in Graphic Design. Davidson has worked as an illustrator in a number of different disciplines, but craft and design have always been the cornerstones of his work. He is married to his wife Julia, and has two sons, Lewis and Hugh.

Another Classic from Ransom Riggs ...
By delicateflower152
Once again, Ransom Riggs gives readers a unique, beautifully written book that is sure to become a modern classic. "Authored" by Millard Nullings, a former resident of “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children”, ten fable-like tales comprise his “Tales of the Peculiar”. Each one highlights a lesson of moral or ethical nature; each one features a “Peculiar”.

“The Splendid Cannibals” cautions against envy and greed; it may be the most violent of the tales. “The Fork-Tongued Princess” tells of the danger in valuing physical beauty above all else and of the freedom that forgiveness affords. “The First Ymbryne” is the story of how Ymbrynes came to be; it should have been the first entry in “Tales of the Peculiar”. “The Woman Who Befriended Ghosts” is a story of seeking friendship and kindred spirits. “Colobolo” reminds readers to accept their innate nature rather than attempting to alter it to conform to society. “The Pigeons of Saint Paul’s” is a story showing that having a stake in something makes a difference to the affected individuals. “The Girl Who Could Tame Nightmares” tells of good intentions producing disastrous results and of using that lesson to benefit others. “The Locust” points out how vital a parent’s unconditional love is in the life of their child. In “The Boy Who Could Hold Back the Sea”, a boy who was tricked into using his “Peculiar” powers for unlawful, nefarious purposes begins to understand that his well-intentioned attempt to help may also have harmful results. “The Tale of Cuthbert” is a story of life-long friendship and loyalty.

Characters are relatable and very "human". Their hopes, fears, and dreams are those we all hold. Their situations and personalities draw the reader into the story and create, in the reader, a feeling of empathy.

Andrew Davidson’s illustrations resemble woodcut engravings like those of Albrecht Durer. Each story is introduced by one full-page drawing; there are no illustrations within a story. The illustrations enhance the reader’s impression that “Tales of the Peculiar” is a book of vintage fables.

The construction of “Tales of the Peculiar” is an important factor influencing the reader’s perception of the book. The gold-and-white design of the end papers, the ribbon marker, and the wheat-colored page numbers and footnotes strengthen the vintage feel. Two factors detracted from the physical presentation of “Tales of the Peculiar”. Instead of a dust jacket, a slick white paper containing information usually included in a dust jacket was glued to the back cover. Further, the wheat-colored ink used for the footnotes made them difficult to read.

Ransom Riggs is one of my favorite authors; his writing is interesting, unusual, and very literate; the "Peculiars" are unique and quirky. “Tales of the Peculiar” was a joy to read. It will take its place in my library beside the “Peculiar Children” volumes.

First of all, this book is absolutely stunning- the cover, the spine, the endpapers, the full page illustrations as well as the smaller ones, the fonts used- I loved everything! The attached ribbon bookmark was also a lovely touch.

Second, this collection was absolutely everything I was hoping for. It was like an Aesop's Fairy Tales collection for Peculiars. I loved every single one of the stories! I wish there were more!!

Third, I loved the illustrations from Andrew Davidson. Each one was wonderfully done and very fitting for the story they preceded.

Fourth, just the detail that was put into this book was perfect. I loved that it was "put together" and annotated by Millard Nullings. I thought that his forward was very Lemony Snicket-esque (which I loved). And I really enjoyed the first edition notice!

I would highly recommend this book for any Miss Peregrine fan.

It's most peculiar
By EA Solinas
One way you can tell that you're reading a good fantasy series is that there's a whole world of other stories outside the main one.

Such is the case of "Tales of the Peculiar," which expands the world of "peculiar people" featured in the Miss Peregrine's Children series. Rather than a true sequel or prequel, Ransom Riggs spins up long-ago-and-far-away tales of peculiars throughout history, which feel a bit like lost fables or fairy tales. Except way, way, way more twisted, amusing and sometimes gruesome.

Among the peculiars examined in the book are:
*A village of peculiars with a very specific ability, who are visited by a wealthy band of law-abiding cannibals, who have a very odd proposition for them.
*A princess who finds that her serpentine peculiarity makes it hard for her to get a husband. Will her father's cruelty and a lack of a prince ruin her life, or will she be able to forge a new one on her own terms?
*The tale of the first ymbryne, a young goshawk with the odd tendency to turn into a human. As she tries to find a place in the human world, she discovers the peculiars -- and the powers she can use to protect them.
*A girl who pulls threadlike nightmares out of people's ears, only to discover that nightmares never actually go away.... and they can get mean.
*Zheng tries to distance himself from the legacy of his sea-mad father, until suddenly grass grows on his feet, seaweed from his armpits, and he starts sweating sand. And what he learns of his father's fate is stranger than he could imagine.
*And stories of birds in a cathedral, a woman who speaks to ghosts, a young boy with a heart too large for his body, a young man who can control the currents of the sea, and a fairy tale of "once upon a peculiar time" where a giant is cursed by a witch.

"Tales of the Peculiar" is the kind of book that one can imagine Miss Peregrine having on her bookshelf. It's mostly stories of a fairy-tale-ish nature where a peculiar runs across some kind of disastrous scenario -- sometimes it's intolerant normal humans, or other peculiars, or just their own nature -- and eventually discovers their own special place in the world.

And with that style of storytelling, Riggs also writes the various short stories in a different style as well. Most of the stories are introduced with some variant of "Once..." or "There was...", and presented in a more distant way, especially since the tales are occasionally interrupted by an editor's note. But he includes plenty of striking emotional scenes and dialogue ("she was gripped by a sudden wild happiness").

The peculiarities are so varied and sometimes bizarre, ranging from X-Man-esque superpowers to involuntary cannibalism to changing into inhuman forms, that the story possibilities are almost limitless. And in the long-ago-and-far-away settings (medieval kingdoms, Irish villages, enchanted forests, imperial China, the American frontier), Riggs also incorporates an unapologetically macabre aesthetic. I mean, the first story in the collection involves wealthy cannibals, and other stories include amputation, nightmare-monsters, venom-spitting and a guy turning into a giant weeping slug.

"Tales of the Peculiar" is a pleasant accompaniment to the Miss Peregrine series -- and though rather different in style, the imaginative stories of peculiar people are pretty entertaining.

"Wolves, please don't cry."
By Konrei
NEVER CRY WOLF is Farley Mowat's first-person reminiscence of his time spent studying wolves in the Canadian arctic. NEVER CRY WOLF, first published in 1963, was one of the earliest, most widely-read, and most effective conservation narratives ever penned. It's Russian edition (the title of which, literally translated back into English, is WOLVES, PLEASE DON'T CRY) was responsible for a Soviet ban on wolf hunting that spared the animals in their natural habitat and gained Mr. Mowat a notorious reputation at the U.S. State Department, which banned his subsequent entry into the United States.

NEVER CRY WOLF has been attacked as being more fable than fact, and this may be true. Mowat has often said that he prefers not to let facts get in the way of the truth, and there is no question that he wanted his readers to come to love these generally benighted creatures. If one doubts the low esteem in which wolves are held one only needs to consider representative northern European fairy tales: Peter and the Wolf, Little Red Riding Hood, and others present the wolf as a four-legged homicidal maniac. Unfortunately, this agelong prejudice has nearly exterminated the wolf in most of its range, courtesy of a certain two-legged homicidal maniac. Like our primordial fear of the dark, and the very common terror of cats, lukophobia derives from the lost years of the cave.

Mowat tells a good story. As a young Game Warden he is sent to remote northermost Canada to evaluate the effect of wolf depredations on the caribou herds. What he finds is that the wolves eat only sick, aged, or weak caribou, thus contributing to natural selection (while human beings are actively destroying whole herds of caribou). He finds that the usual wolf diet is skinks, voles and mice (he claims to have tried mouse as a meal and includes a recipe for Souris a la Creme in the book). He finds that the wolves are a natural part of the ecosystem, and that a pack of wolves together is far less destructive than even a single human being with a rifle.

Mowat tells us of observing a wolf family at close range, the members of which he names "George", "Angeline," and "Uncle Albert." Together with a litter of pups, these three become the center of Mowat's tale. He credits them with all sorts of anthropomorphisms including dramatic abilities to communicate amongst themselves and with other wolves, and gives each a strikingly distinct personality. He respects George and he likes the clownish Uncle Albert, but he is simply head-over-heels in love with Angeline, over whom he waxes almost as rhapsodic as if she were a human female.

Lupinologists dismiss most of Mowat's observations as purely imaginative. Whether Mowat tosses away his credibility or makes his point more powerfully by ascribing so many fine human virtues to these creatures (they are nothing short of poster-wolves for 'family values') is dependent upon the reader and his or her mindset toward the natural world.

For this reviewer, who is tired of the slow, careless and sometimes intentional destruction of our natural environment, and who is convinced that our Earth is striking back against the imbalances we've created by generating warming seas, melting icecaps, tsunamis, hurricanes, earthquakes, and all sorts of other phenomena, it does not seem at all a bad idea for us to humanize the wolf if by so humanizing him we will be more inclined to save him. And the same goes for the rest of the planet.

Comedian As Scientist Entertains As He Informs
By buddyhead
I picked this book up recently for the first time since high-school, some 15-plus (!) years ago. Maybe it was Steve Irwin's death, or a viewing of the documentary Grizzly Man, that got me to thinking about it- either way, I'm glad I did. I'd forgotten what a wacky character Farley Mowat was, and how much more there is to this quick read than dry scientific reporting.

Mowat's communing with the wolves (circa 1950) was partially borne of pure, scientific curiosity; in his own words, he "took the word biology- which means the study of life- at its face value," and sought to immerse himself outdoors and away from an aseptic laboratory. The other thing engendering his research was the vagary of the Canadian government, which set him to studying wolves in Ottawa with a throw of the dice (not to mention next to no itinerary, instructions, or training).

Mowat dispelled major myths of wolf as bloodthirsty, marauding monsters, and showed them to be gentle, caring, and family-oriented (in fact, mostly monogamous) creatures. He never felt threatened by his lupine companions, despite keeping quarters very close to- and at one point, entering- the den. He witnessed "George, Angeline, and Uncle Albert" engage in compassionate acts like nurturing and training young pups and serving as hosts for traveling packs of non-native wolves. The chapter at the narrative's end ("To Kill A Wolf") describing the indiscriminate and government-promoted wolf hunting practices is made sadder by the way the wolves have by then won the reader's heart.

What made this nature tale really shine, however, was Mowat's plucky attitude and unconventional scientific methodology. He alternately horrified Eskimo locals and won them over with alcohol. He pretty much ignored what little government protocol he had to follow until nearly the end of his trip, cramming in his duties like a high-schooler churning out a last-minute term paper. He learned to sleep via a nightly succession of 5-10 minute "wolf-naps" (and told of later ticking off a female companion understandably unused to the practice). And the- ahem- frosting on the cake was his approach to scientifically determine whether or not large mammals could sustain themselves on a diet of mice alone, after discovering over time that rodents constituted the majority of the wolves' diet: he ate nothing but the same, for months on end. God bless unorthodox scientific discoveries, and the lovable nut jobs that make them.

Entertaining, but NOT a true story and NOT real science
By J. Scarff
My problem with Farley Mowat's (non-autobiographical) books is that they play extremely loose with the facts and the persons described, and in some cases just lie. In the case of Never Cry Wolf, Mowat plagiarizes substantially. Mowat's misinformation undercuts the credibility of real scientists at a time scientists are routinely disregarded by our policy makers, reinforces the public misconception that researchers find only what they want to find, and misleads people badly about the true nature of wolves and our environmental issues.

The basic plot of Never Cry Wolf is of Mowat as a young field biologist during summers in Canada who had to fight incompetent, unsympathetic bureaucratic supervisors whose only interest was in finding excuses to kill wolves. Mowat claims he discovered that the wolves ate mainly mice, not endangering the caribou, deer or other large prey species, but that the bureaucracy fought to suppress these findings.

In fact, Mowat's field experience was nothing like what he describes in Never Cry Wolf, and far less extensive or valuable. Mowat has never published any scientific reports supporting his claims. The head of his scientific field project was Doug Pimlott, one of the top wolf scientists in North America, and a man with enormous integrity, sympathy for, and understanding of wolves. The actual facts of Mowat's very limited field experience have been described in several scientific journals. Folks interested in the true story should search out the reviews of Never Cry Wolf published by Pimlott in the Journal of Wildlife Management 30:236-37 (1966) and Banfield, A.W.F. in the Can. Field Naturalist 78:52-52 (1964).

Even more troubling is Mowat's apparent plagiarism. In Never Cry Wolf, Mowat describes at considerable length play among various members of a wolf pack he observed. Except he did not observe this. This section seems to be lifted pretty intact from Adolph Murie's classic field study of wolves in Alaska - The Wolves of Mount McKinley (U.S. Natl Park Service, Fauna Ser No. 5, 1944).

As to Mowat's claim that the wolves in his study ate mainly mice, this is ridiculous. The wolves in the area he allegedly studied live primarily off large prey such as deer, caribou and moose, with beaver probably being the smallest prey eaten routinely. The wolf's diet is discussed authoritatively in the recent monograph Wolves, Behavior, Ecology and Conservation (ed. L. David Mech and Luigi Boitani, Univ. of Chicago Press, 2003). The chapter on diet (p.104) begins:

"From the best-selling book and popular movie, Never Cry Wolf?millions of people gained the impression that wolves eat mice, rarely caribou. Author Farley Mowat later admitted fabricating much of the story (Goddard 1996), originally billed as true, to gain public sympathy for the wolf. Mowat succeeded enormously, and decades later the misconception remains." (Goddard = A Real Whopper, Saturday Night III:(4), 46-50, 52, 54, 64.)

What saddens me is that there are so many other, better books about wolves. A superb book that explores brilliantly human's complex interaction scientifically, culturally, and historical with wolves and is exceptionally well written, I recommend Barry Lopez's Of Wolves and Men. Lopez, an extraordinarily eloquent writer, approaches his subject with both a sophisticated grasp of the science of wolves as well as a sensitive, accurate and very insightful understanding of other cultural ways of understanding wolves, their environment and their interaction with humans.

Any books by L. David Mech or John Theberge would be a much better use of one's time reading about wolves.

Short on substance and details
By Dennis S. Spencer
Having purchased two other books of this nature by Mr. Lang, I placed myself on the waiting list at Amazon and waited months the get the book in my hands. I did not hesitate to break it out of the packaging and dove right into it. The first forty-five pages were dedicated to the history and other background information necessary to get a good understanding of the Greenes' design concepts and the practical methods used by the Hall brothers to construct the pieces. I was very disappointed with the scant number of details that one might expect from such a technical manual. There are a few photographs that show some of the processes (most of us know how to use a shoulder plane) but what was lacking were drawings to reinforce or to make clear some of the principles Lang was trying to describe. The book read like a series of essays rather than a substantive, technical manual with supporting details.

The actual measured drawings are just that as they lack certain pertinent construction details. I am a fairly skilled woodworker, having started the craft at the age of fourteen and have continued until today, even after a successful career in architecture; and what I have concluded is that this book was hurriedly put together to meet some preset deadline. It is my opinion that if more time and thought was given by the author to the details it would have resulted in a much better book.

So I am sorely disappointed with the contents and the lack of detailing and would not recommend this book to anyone but very experienced woodworkers. Mr. Lang has missed the mark this time and what a pity.

Mario Guide
By Michael Kerner
With all the hype around New Super Mario Brothers Wii for the Nintendo Wii, there is so much excitement awaiting in the wings to see the delightful Plumber from Nintendo deliver in a fun & loving adventure. But, where there is a new Mario game, there is also a new strategy guide awaiting for Mario fans to help them along the way. The new startegy guide for New Super Mario Brother Wii, is mostly a helpful guide that clearly displays the maps for all of the challenging levels throughout the Mushroom kingdom, and gives you good tidbits on how to defeat Bowser and his alliances from his Koopa Kids like Roy and Ludwig, to unlocking new paths to helping you accumulate Star Coins throught each level. My one big gripe is that I wish the guide could've brought up a little more detail on how some of the controls for the game work, as was in the past with previous strategy guides on Mario games. While it is sad that Nintendo has made the decision to stop making strategy guides of their own, and letting Prima handle them, what they made to help you out in New Super Mario Brother Wii, is mostly a helpful guide to save Princess Toadstool (a.k.a. Princess Peach) from the clutches of evil. If you have the game, I absolutely recommend you own the guide too.

Where's the Red Toad House solution guide?
By Amazon Customer
I bought this guide for one reason and that was hopes of having the solutions to the Red Toad Houses for each level. The rest of the guide is amazing, but how can such a guide be complete without solutions to help max out your items? To most this won't be a big deal, however; I had hoped this guide would be much like the guide I owned for Super Mario Bros. 3 which contained the very useful solution guide for the matching games. Thank you to those who post FAQs on gamefaqs as I managed to find a solution guide for the Red Toad Houses there. On a grander scale with strategy guides today, they appear to contain far less information than strategy guides did 10-20 years ago. Is asking for a 100% complete guide too much to ask for? I don't think so. It is a strategy guide containing spoilers after all. Luckily with the exception of the missing solutions for the Red Toad Houses (which is not random as some may think) the guide is still exceptional and useful to find all of the secrets locked within the game.

Review of the guide itself . . somewhat disappointed
By Mam
Some of the reviews are about how great the game itself is - and it is great. However this guide is disappointing.

I have always loved the Prima strategy books, but this one doesn't live up to their usual standards.

The game level maps are quite small and not easy to detect where you are. Also, they reference locations by number (at point 5, drop down into the space for instance) but there are also letters on the maps that don't have a corresponding explanation.

Also, the book is light on tips and actual strategies. I can understand not explaining every detail, but for the really tough parts, it would be nice to have a "hint box" that could be used if you get stuck.

The best feature is the location of the gold star coins.
