a Challenge to Modernization Theory

While most states of the Middle East region have pursued policies that more or less approached the prescriptions of the Modernization type meta-theories, there has been the general perception, from within and without, that the region as a whole has failed to live up to the promise of social and economic welfare that modern development was supposed to generate. The political advancement of the Region toward more pluralistic or democratic forms of government that was supposed to proceed as the inevitable result of economic and industrial transformation has been even more disappointing and lagged far below material achievements. In The State and Social Transformation in Tunisia and Libya 1830-1980 Lisa Anderson has rejected the mainstream meta-theoretical approaches to the study of the nature of development in the Middle East. Through a process of historical analysis of the socio-economic mechanisms that have characterized the nature of Libya and Tunisia's different paths of social and political transformation, Anderson has emphasized the study of state formation processes and the particular nature of a peripheral's state integration in the world capitalist system. Anderson has challenged both of the principal development meta-theories that became popular in the decades after WWII. She has contested Modernization theory's interpretation of development moving in a linear pattern through predictable stages to inevitably culminate in the establishment of a democratic capitalist state modeled on the pattern of the West. She has noted that development is not achieved without cost and that social conflict is a necessary outcome as the State balances its monopoly of authority as it coerces and encourages different social and economic actors to achieve a relative degree of stability and equity. In order to achieve this and promote a real degree of social transformation an efficient bureaucracy and public administration are crucial. Accordingly, her study has shown the contrasting development patterns of Libya and Tunisia. In the former, Anderson has stressed the persistence of kinship based societal relations and null bureaucratic development during the period of Italian colonization and the perpetuation of this pattern after independence. Oil rents made it possible for the Libyan administration to rely almost exclusively on its distributive capacity to prevent the establishment of efficient institutional and bureaucratic machinery; consequently, society and political development have not progressed toward the formation of a modern state in the Weberian sense.

I used this book though out my essay on Tunisia and the impact of French (European) imperialism on Tunisia. It provided all of the information that I needed and then some, best source of information possible. Loved it, amazing help, really recommend buying!

Author Stephen Fried manages to get all the sleaze value plus a lot of surprises by choosing supermodel Gia Carangi as his topic. Although her face is widely recognized, Gia finished her modeling career in a blaze of heroin and disease just before the time when models became celebrities with name recognition. Her life is the perfect fodder for the exploitation market, but Fried goes beyond that with fluid prose and a reporter's nose for tracking down sources. His stories about her teenage years, with their mix of late nights in Philadelphia's gay clubs, manic worship, and glam-style imitation of David Bowie, as well as tales of Gia's ability to seduce her friends, male and female, are the product of a lot of work and make for very interesting reading. Gia's unabashed homosexuality and early death from AIDS make her story a palimpsest of life on the edge in the America of the 1980s.

One of the biggest "whatever happened to... ?" queries in the fashion world gets answered here, as Fried, a writer for Philadelphia magazine, details the rise (cover of Vogue ) and fall (death by AIDS) of Gia Carangi, a sultry young beauty who shot to prominence--and shot heroin--during the 1970s disco heyday. It's also a big "what if" story: if Gia had not died, Cindy Crawford (dubbed "baby Gia") may not have become the overexposed supermodedel she is today. Fried obviously means Gia's harrowing life to be partly a cautionary tale for all those young girls who wish to be models. However, Gia had many problems (broken home, drug use, confused sexuality) even before she stepped in front of a camera. Fried deridingly describes a 20/20 segment on modeling as "a report meant to detail 'the dark and anxious' side of the modeling business but manages somehow to make the whole enterprise seem extremely glamorous anyway," yet his saga, packed with juicy scoops about other models and photographers, has the same effect. In other words, this book will have a tremendous appeal to a general audience. For all public libraries.

Intrigued by the HBO movie "Gia"?

Surprisingly relevant to a large segment of people: women, mothers, and daughters, lesbians, sexually ambivalent women, people who have faced addiction, and those touched by AIDS.

After reading this well researched account of gorgeous supermodel Gia Carangi's very brief life, I'm still undecided if she was merely an over indulged pretty junkie or a tragic victim of her own beauty and dysfunctional family. Like most things though, the truth is far more complex and is probably somewhere in the middle. What is clearly apparent is that Gia's looks, and the ruthless profit driven world of fashion that uses and spits out beautiful girls in a macabre machine draped in gold lame and false promises, provided the catalyst that led to her demise.

From awkward pre-teen to AIDS victim at 26, Fried covers Gia's life through unflinching eyes and takes the reader on a heady journey: latch-key teen from a broken family, David Bowie fanatic, meteoric rise (at the impressionable age of 17 no less) to official globe trotting uber-hottie, drug experimentation that eventually led her to the seedy heroin shooting galleries of NYC's infamous Lower East Side, black-balled from the tight knit modeling world, relocating to the underbelly of Atlantic City in an unbelievably destructive relationship, then total rehabilitation only to be finally destroyed by AIDS in a time when AIDS was just being understood. Oh yes, it's a heady journey indeed and Fried deserves more than a nod for navigating the reader through it.

An insightful look into what it means to be more than merely pretty in America. Especially when the role of glamour girl is not especially welcome.

Ain't Enough Stars For This Book!

This book should be in every American home.
It is a brilliant telling of a tragic situation, in which a very beautiful young woman was placed, without the core values or life skills to negotiate it. What woman divorces her husband AND her children? What woman allows her 16 year-old daughter to move to New York City, unchaperoned? There is no excuse for the lack of parenting. The book is an excellent story of how fashion, i.e. advertising, works, and her stellar place within it. She was ill-equipped to utilize her status within the fashion community to create a beautiful life for herself. Her habit became an addiction. Her addiction became a disease. Her disease became a death sentence. It truly is a tragic story. but, still, there remains a sad, melancholy beauty that is still reflected in sensual. elegant images of this young Italian girl.
Her legacy will endure.

Gia comes alive in this book - vivid !

This book closes the door on the movie - with this book u know the true answers an the reality of Gia's life . She seemed to know how far she came which is good an her purpose is such an example for us all . I finished the book in 5 days - an I didn't want to but it's such a page turner . Gia was so alone in her life but she seemed very funny as well wish I can say more Stephen fried did a great job wish he would update more recent stuff on some of the people in the book . This is a go to book if u want to read the truth about her instead of the movie . No one was truly there for Gia . Mt daughter would not be in the rain sleeping on a mattress getting raped or at a bus station with full blown aids alone while I go check on my sones new baby arrival ? Thank u Stephen for the books honesty . When I say I wish I could say more its because I have a lot to say in reference to Gia's acquaintances an the people she should not have trusted . In the end Gia kept people in her life for all the wrong reasons because her family was not there for her . So she depended on her friends an loves for everything an that was used against her as well by these people . If your interested in the truth read this book Gia was noT just another pretty face at all . An her life was anything but perfect she was always alone even in the end she was alone .

Author Erik Larson imbues the incredible events surrounding the 1893 Chicago World's Fair with such drama that readers may find themselves checking the book's categorization to be sure that The Devil in the White City is not, in fact, a highly imaginative novel. Larson tells the stories of two men: Daniel H. Burnham, the architect responsible for the fair's construction, and H.H. Holmes, a serial killer masquerading as a charming doctor. Burnham's challenge was immense. In a short period of time, he was forced to overcome the death of his partner and numerous other obstacles to construct the famous "White City" around which the fair was built. His efforts to complete the project, and the fair's incredible success, are skillfully related along with entertaining appearances by such notables as Buffalo Bill Cody, Susan B. Anthony, and Thomas Edison. The activities of the sinister Dr. Holmes, who is believed to be responsible for scores of murders around the time of the fair, are equally remarkable. He devised and erected the World's Fair Hotel, complete with crematorium and gas chamber, near the fairgrounds and used the event as well as his own charismatic personality to lure victims. Combining the stories of an architect and a killer in one book, mostly in alternating chapters, seems like an odd choice but it works. This is a steady performance of a book that, while gripping in its content and crisply paced, isn't quite a gold mine for an audio performer. It relies on journalistic narration and includes almost no quotes, so there isn't much chance for interesting characterization. But it is excellent nonfiction, chronicling the hurly-burly planning and construction of the 1893 Chicago World's Fair (which did, as the title suggests, include building what amounted to an entire city) and a cruelly calculating sociopath who used the event's tumult and crowds to serve his homicidal compulsion. Goldwyn is an experienced narrator with a keen dramatic sense, and his resonant voice is well-suited to the project. Music is used only sparingly, but the few subdued, creepy bars Goldwyn reads over in the beginning do an excellent job of creating atmosphere for a tale that is subtle but often genuinely unsettling. Listeners will also be fascinated by descriptions of the sheer logistics of the fair itself, which serve as not only carefully crafted and informative history, but also as welcome breaks from the macabre and relentless contrivances of the killer. In all, it's a polished presentation of an intriguing book that outlines the heights of human imagination and perseverance against the depths of our depravity.

*Starred Review* Larson's ambitious, engrossing tale of the Chicago World's Fair of 1893 focuses primarily on two men: Daniel H. Burnham, the architect who was the driving force behind the fair, and Henry H. Holmes, a sadistic serial killer working under the cover of the busy fair. After the 1889 French Exposition Universel wowed the world with the Eiffel Tower and high attendance numbers, interest began to grow in the U.S. for a similar fair. Chicago and New York were the top contenders for the location, and in February 1890, Chicagoans were overjoyed to hear they had won the honor. Burnham and his partner, John Root, the leading architects in Chicago, were tapped for the job, and they in turn called on Frederick Law Olmstead, Louis Sullivan, and Richard M. Hunt to help them build the world's greatest fair. They faced overwhelming obstacles: inhospitable weather, bureaucracy, illness, and even death. Unbeknownst to any of them, Holmes, a charismatic, handsome doctor, had arrived in the city and built a complex with apartments, a drugstore, and a vault, which he used to trap his victims until they suffocated. When the White City opened for business in May 1893, hundreds of thousands of people flocked to it, although a plummeting economy and several accidents did nothing to help business. Disappointing

There was much detail about the Chicago Worlds Fair, but very little about the first documented serial killer in America, Herman Webster Mudgett (Dr. Henry Howard Holmes). There was little detail in the book about this man, his life, his crimes and his particular brand of psychopath. He was an extremely interesting monster that was treated almost as an afterthought to the main subject of the fair. He should have been the main focus of the story and the fair used as a backdrop to his crimes. H. H. Holmes was not like any other serial killer. He was and still is the nebulous monster in the shadows we all fear. In short, if you are thinking this book is about a serial killer gathering his victims during the Chicago Worlds Fair, you are wrong. It is about the Fair being secretly used by a prolific serial killer to satisfy his bloodlust. The movie based on this book is supposed to release next year. I can only hope it gives Dr. Holmes and his crimes center stage and delves into who and what he really was as far as pure psychopaths can be. Having said that, the book was well written and quite interesting. I gave it 3 stars only for this reason. If the author had made a much greater effort to 'flesh-out' Holmes and make him the focus of the book instead of the fair I might have felt five stars had been earned.

I loved this book

Where to start? I loved this book! *May contain spoilers* This novel was filled with history, challenges, hope, and murder. The writing began slowly but drew me in after getting past the first couple chapters. However, those chapters were key for setting the scene and getting to know each character (as all books do). The description of how the Fair came to be, was built, and impacted Chicago was fascinating. During the building of the Fair my favorite part was guessing what item became their "master work" to outshine Eiffel's Tower. I was not familiar with Chicago's Fair or it's background before this book, the final piece chosen was a fun mystery to guess as the architects also worked to discover it. The portions of the novel regarding H.H. Holmes and the murders he partook in were sickening. Had Holmes' history not been included into the novel I would have found the Fair alone to be less engaging. I think this portion kept me drawn in and wondering how he would be caught. The author's references and notes towards the end of the book are extensive. This is another piece that made me love this novel. His research provided endless historical proof to create the flowing piece he created. It was hard at times to remember this was based on real events because the events related to Holmes were gut wrenching. Something a fictional character, a bad guy would do. The challenges the architects encountered before and after the Fair was built were rough. They placed so much hope into the Fair changing the world's view of Chicago that it almost destroyed them. Their health, families and happiness were greatly impacted. I hope to reread this novel many times. I feel I learned so much, but missed a lot as well. With so much information packed into the story I bet a second or third read will benefit me in catching something I missed. Definitely a five out of five star. Recommending to everyone I know. A new favorite!

Two stories juxtaposed around the 1893 Chicago Columbian Exposition, that of the gifted young creator, architect Daniel Burnham, who designed and built the breathtakingly beautiful White City, and psychotic destroyer H. H. Holmes, the serial killer who took advantage of the draw of the White City to victimize young woman visitors to Chicago. Both stories are riveting, covering in detail the labors of each man, one struggling to build the White City itself and the other a "hotel" near the fair grounds, designed to make efficient the murder and disposal of young visitors. In between, you're treated to the spectacle of watching an entire major city being designed and built, skyscraper by skyscraper, on the ashes of a fire that swept through and destroyed the old city two decades prior. You don't have to be a Chicagoan to find this book hard to put down and impossible to forget. One of the best books I've ever read.

I *HATED* This Book

This book is awful. Seriously, save yourself the money. Instead, find a drunken frat buddy -- ideally one who is a failed comic. If they're childless, the advice will be on-par with this book. If they have a kid, then you actually might come out ahead. Either way, at least you'll be drunk.

This book makes every stupid cliche joke you can think of. Worst of all, it imparts little-to-no useful information.

Unsatisfied, I looked around for another book, and found "The Expectant Father: Facts, Tips, and Advice for Dads-to-Be." I'm about 1/3 of the way in, but I've already learned more than I did from the entirety of the "Dude!" book.

Seriously, I read the entire thing.

Learn from my pain.

Do not buy this book.

An easy read but lacks depth

(Review from wife) This book had me laughing out loud at many points but after finishing the book I felt my husband would have a very cursory knowledge of what I was going through and what I would expect of him at the birth.

Summary: Wife will be "DEFCON 1 CRAZY", sex will not happen for over a year, you will never sleep, wife will spend all your money on "a whole new wardrobe". Basically, everything is not going to be fun but the reward is great.

A couple of times the author refuses to describe what an episiotomy *actually* is. Pg 93 "When you learn what that one is, you'll start to believe Eve did screw up and God did punish accordingly." and in the section Is It Sexy Time Yet? he says "Did she have to suffer through an episiotomy? (If you don't know what it is, dude. Pay more attention.)" However he NEVER tells the husband what it is! It's a very common procedure and requires special care, why wouldn't you just describe the procedure and how to care for your wife? I wanted this book to better educate my husband.

The book can be a liiiittle annoying at times, though I wasn't personally offended because my husband knows I won't blow $2000 on preggo clothes: Pg 38 "Now the bad news, she's going to need a whole new wardrobe," and it will cost "a mortgage payment." He does go on to mention you can try to borrow or buy used clothes, though.

His good advice moderately touches on: birth plans, doulas, c-sections, packing hospital bags. These all have a whole one or two pages of very basic information. The whole book reads like a pamphlet in the doctor's office.

Overall, if your husband/partner has agreed to read ONE pregnancy book, pass on this book and get The Expectant Father or Be Prepared: A Practical Handbook for New Dads. I foresee science-minded or engineer types hating Dude, You're Gonna Be A Dad.

If you are having trouble getting him to read ANY thing, then try this book. It's funny enough to capture his interest in the beginning and possibly keep it long enough for the six hours it takes to read this book.

Insulting and idiotic.

A female friend gave this to me as a gift. Her husband had read it and they thought I might like or appreciate the book. If you want to offend a male friend, do like they did.

I'm a "dude" who grew up with two older sisters who practically raised me. Father was a social worker who cleaned the house and cooked better than my mother. (To give just two examples.) Did my friend actually think I'd appreciate a book written from (to borrow another reviewer's comment) a frat boy perspective?

No, I did not read the entire book. I'd have no hair left if I had because it would be all pulled out. Every single page I turned to was full of idiotic nonsensical attempts at bad humor combined with a tiny scrap of somewhat useful info. For example, on one page the author comments that guys are clueless about how to hold a baby because we, the testosterone bloated beasts that we are, don't know how to be gentle with our hands unless we're touching breasts. Give me a random page number and I could give one or more example of this kind of crap.

Do not get this book for a man unless he's clueless. If he doesn't know the difference between a tampon and a pad maybe he might get something from this so-called "educational" book. Otherwise, give him something written by an actual expert on pregnancy and how men experience this life changing event. This doofus who wrote it - he doesn't have a degree, he's not a counselor. He's just some guy who's had some kids and someone told him he was funny and he seems to believe it. Worse, he seems to think he speaks for all other men. He doesn't. He's an idiot writing for other idiots. Unless you're one of those guys, stay away.

About the Author
Mark Hutter is a professor of sociology at Rowan University and has served as coordinator of the Bantivoglio Honors Program. He teaches and has an active and ongoing research agenda in both urban studies and family sociology and has extensively published and presented papers in these areas. He is the author of The Changing Family 3rd ed (Allyn and Bacon, 1998) and the editor of The Family Experience 4th ed (Allyn & Bacon, 2004). His scholarship and pedagogical involvement in the field of family studies has received international recognition with the award of the National Council on Family Relations’ Jan Trost Award for Outstanding Contributions to Comparative Family Studies in 2004. He is a past president of the Society for the Study of Symbolic Interaction and Alpha Kappa Delta, the International Sociology Honor Society.

Best Urban Textbook Currently on the Market

I teach Urban Sociology and have looked at a number of textbooks. For me, Mark Hutter's book is the best one on the market at the moment. It covers all of the topics one would expect in a textbook and it is well written, for the most part. Although Hutter discusses the main theories in urban sociology, he primarily uses symbolic interactionism to show how people's perceptions of the city are shaped by their social class, race, and gender characteristics and the political economy perspective to illuminate how cities do not just happen, but take shape based on the influence of political, business, and real estate elites. Hutter, for example, discusses how our notions about gender and family shaped the development of shopping in downtown areas and lead to the rise of the suburbs. What sets Hutter's book apart from the rest is that he incorporates a cultural perspective in his analysis of city life. For example, the book has a chapter on the City as Work of Art, where Hutter links impressionist paintings, city life, and the emerging middle class in Paris and the work of Mural artists in Philadelphia to urban redevelopment. There is also a chapter on how skyscrapers reflect the image that corporate interests what to project to the public. Lastly, Hutter looks at connections to others and how urban settings can facilitate or inhibit them, and the consequences of social isolation for people's well-being. Most of the problems that I have with the book revolve around poor editing. There are passages in one paragraph that are repeated in the next one, which suggests that Hutter moved some sentences around for this Second Edition and was not careful about deleting the old material. There are also some mistakes in citations. For example, in discussing George Will's comments on the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the text misspells his last name as Wills multiple times. While minor, these errors detract from the overall quality of Hutter's writing. I
recommended it to anyone teaching a class in Urban Sociology.

Being that I just took Urban Sociology this semester I thought it would be best to go ahead and give my two cents on the text book. "Discovering Cities" isn't a bad text book, but then it isn't the single greatest text book either. It does focus on the basics of Urban Sociology, but there are portions that seems to just skim over. I was lucky enough to have a wonderful professor for the class who seemed to know the material well enough that she was able to provide insight where the book fell short. Still, for a run of the mill text book it's not bad. I would have preferred for it to go deeper into the culture and subcultures of the Urban setting, but then again "we can't always get what we want."

Do I recommend it? Sure if your course is using the book get it, but do I recommend it for a private collection? No, you would be far better off doing research on the Chicago School and going from there.

Good book, great man.

Loved the book. I took an Urban Sociology class last semester & we used this book because my professor was Mark Hutter, the author. Love him & the book so much that I'm taking him again now. Such a cool guy, he's absolutely passionate about what he does & I think it shows in this book as well. I may be biased because I know the man himself but it's an easier read than most textbooks. It flows well & the tone in which it's written made it feel personal & kept my attention.

Each volume opens with a general introduction, followed by spreads that describe development or innovations in each topic from the ancient world to the present. Examples are drawn from both American history (especially School and Food) and world history. The titles are brief, and because they each contain only five or six topics, coverage is spotty and there are wide gaps between time periods and technological advances. Books close with a full page "Amazing but True" anecdote, instructions for a simple craft, and two Common Core questions. Words are defined on each page, and full-page photos and illustrations are unimaginative. These books will help students understand that all aspects of their lives have historical relevance. Excellent resource

This is a great resource for medical professionals also starting in the NICU. It provideo a handy section about on call problems for easy reference. I've bought several nicu books and this one is the most helpful.

Best for residents

I heard really good things about this book from practicing colleagues. It's not as good as I had expected. Fine for a resident, but for the small town pediatrician in the trenches dealing with sick neonates an airplane ride away from the nearest NICU, not so good. Seems to sacrifice breadth for depth.
