About the Author

Dr. Eve Shapiro is assistant professor of sociology at Westfield State College. She received her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of California, Santa Barbara and has published in a number of journals including Gender & Society, Sexualities, and the Journal of Gay and Lesbian Social Services. Her current research elaborates the dynamic relationships between identity and community, including how new information and biomedical technologies are changing the gendered lives of cisgender and transgender individuals.

About the Author

Terry R. Myers is a Chicago- and Los Angeles-based writer, educator, and independent curator. A regular contributor since 1988 to numerous international journals, including Art Review, The Brooklyn Rail, Parkett, and Modern Painters, he is the author of Mary Heilmann: Save the Last Dance for Me (Afterall Books, 2007). He is Associate Professor of Painting and Drawing at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

A book to chew or gnaw on for a while... Better than most!

There's enough painting and painters going on now globally to turn one's head inside out. And this is (one) of the good collections of commentary on some of it; 'the words to the paint', if you will. It's probably better than most books out there that promise good discussion 'on painting'. So, if that's your thing, I recommend it. Do keep in mind, the mix of essays ranges evenly from 1981~2009.

But, said ~30 years of discourse in one book naturally makes for a random/narrow, commercial/avante-guarde, didactic/speculative, confusing/convenient, heavy/light, etc/etc...all pretty consistent with today's painting going on. It's not to be read cover to cover, (mine stays near the tub,) and several of the essays are on the scholarly/ hard-to-decipher side. The essays date from 1981-2009 and include interviews, writings, criticisms, etc from well known (painters, critics, philosophers, hists, etc), to names you'll have to look up, if so inclined. There's 'mourning the death of painting', markets/capitalism/gallerism, Women in ptg., on China (Dafen), modern public/audience considerations, historical considerations, etc. Painters discussed or their writings, and some of the critics/writers include: Richter, Chuck Close, Dumas, Oehlen & Butzer, Jim Shaw, Storr, Philip Taaffe, B Milhazes, Tuymans, Curin, Mira Schor,... Deleuze, Groos, Collings &Alpers, Jerry Saltz, Storr, etcetc ... Thats only a few, random names...there's no shortage of subjects (size or range)...Easily more of these collections 'on PAINTING' could be similarly published with the 1000's of similar writings out there. Some of the best contemporary thought and musing is in this book but a lot is probably missing...
There's also a lot of rehash and old thought and popular themes, some cool interviews (the artists it seems are just as bewildered - and admit it.)

If you are mainly an art-painting-lover who likes to look at paintings (NO illustrations in this book), go look and buy and continue to love paintings, you dont NEED this book (unless thats your idea of fun).

If you are a painter, go to the studio and paint, dont bother or get too bogged down by such ramblings as these. That's THEIR job, to write and theorize. You dont NEED this book (unless thats your idea of fun...probably is.)

If you're curator, critic, gallerist, historian, philosopher, intellectual etcetc., don't wait another moment, buy a copy to gorge on.

contemporary thoughts on painting

I was hoping this had more artists that are hard core painters and not the typical famous artists and their view on painting. But the essays are interesting. Painting is returning as an area of focus and I was hoping this documented this new interest.

Read it, but don't expect any major revelations.

Every 30 pages I encountered a paragraph that reminded me why I was reading the book. That's basically summarizes my thoughts about all of the Documents of Contemporary Art series. Read it, but don't expect any major revelations. And don't be afraid to skip ahead when you get bored.

To have a book that has excerpted the best of the best of the photographic artistry of Dylan Rosser, images that have been previously part the highly successful monographs of the male nude - RED, X-POSED, NAKED - seems like the finest gift around. His images are so excellent and so sensual that it is best to be reminded or the credentials of the artist.

Originally from South Africa, Dylan Rosser started his career in the graphic design field, working on various lifestyle magazines in Cape Town. Starting out as a Junior Designer, he worked his way up to Art Director before moving to London in 1998. It was this move that brought about his change in direction, although his graphic design background still shows through in his work today. His work, featuring models from the UK as well as abroad, focuses on the sculptural beauty of the male form. Working with light and shadow, his style brings out the athleticism and sensuality of his subjects.

A fellow colleague of his, a gifted artist also, Rick Day has said the following: `I first met Dylan back in 2008. It was my first time shooting another photographer so I was a bit nervous. When Dylan arrived at my studio, all my nervous energy dissipated. He was not only quite handsome but genuine. I was working on my first book for Bruno Gmünder and was not really familiar with a lot of the photographers on their roster. Since our first encounter I have been following Dylan's work and am always amazed at his attention to detail as well as his ability to find such nice subject matter. I love that I am writing for this book Naked, because when I think of Dylan's work, the last thing I think about is clothing. Dylan dresses his models in beautiful lighting and often times presents those in an almost sterile environment yet bathing them in richly saturated color. His images are stark, erotic and effortless ... and trust me ... that is a talent within itself. I am honored to call him my friend and I look forward to seeing where he takes us next.'

An excellent repertoire for d4 players as White - Part 1

I really like the books that are being put out by Chess Stars Publishing. The work on the black side of e4 The Open Games for Black and The Berlin Defence are outstanding in both content and production quality. I have been using Schandorff's books Playing 1.d4: The Queen's Gambit (Grandmaster Guide) and Playing 1.d4: The Indian Defences (Grandmaster Guide) to guide me in playing 1.d4. I like this book and it's companion A Practical White Repertoire with 1.D4 and 2.C4: The King's Fianchetto Defences 2 as a complement to Schandorff because they are organized differently.

Schandorff gives lines in chapters by opening 1) QGD 2) QGA 3) Slav 4) Semi-Slav 5) a6-Slav 6) Tarrasch 7) Chigorin 8) Minor Lines

Kornev's book is organized differently and has different recommendations for some openings:

1) Black avoids the main lines (where the Chigorin coverage is broader than Schandorff's)
2) QGA (where he recommends 3.e3 rather than Schandorff's 3.e4
3) Black avoids the QGD (where the Tarrasch is covered)
4) QGD (favoring the exchange variation)
5) Slav (Where Kornev recommends the Nc3 and the Meran variation (avoiding the semi-Slav), whereas Schandorff recommends the Nf3 heading into 5.a4 where 5...Bf5 is the real test).

You can see how these books complement each other, I like the 3.e4 line for the QGA, so this book doesn't help me now (maybe later...) while his discussion of the QGD and all the minor lines is excellent.

First Book in an Excellent 3-Volume White Repertoire

I'll just second the other reviewer's opinion that this book and the two companion volumes are very well done. They present a high-quality positionally-oriented White repertoire.

Unless you are a budding GM or World Champion, this repertoire series is probably more practical in terms of the theory that must be mastered than some of the other denser White repertoire series (e.g., Khalifman's "White According to Kramnik" and Avrukh's two-volume "1. d4" opus). It still manages to fight for an advantage and to choose principled lines, and to present a repertoire which you might occasionally need to tweak (after all, chess theory is constantly evolving) but will never need to radically change. All of the lines chosen by Kornev are sound and will stand the test of time.

A nice tool to have; however, I would like to have more study information included with the practice tests and further explanation about the answers. This is especially important for persons who have been working in the field and put off the exam for years; perhaps not so important for those just out of school and finishing a graduate internship. Nonetheless, an added tool for preparation.

Just average!

NCE Practice Questions is just average. The book has some errors and the questions are much easier than what you get on the exam itself.

Okay for basic concepts, not great for application or deeper knowledge

I have been using other study guides and sources for months, but decided to purchase this for the practice tests. So far I have only skimmed through some of the questions and answers. What I have noticed so far:
1. An answer was incorrect (the description of the answer was correct, but the actual answer was incorrect. Think it may have been a typo.
2. Speaking of typos, there have been several, including repeated choice answers for a question.
3. The language is simple and tests the very basic concepts and information. If you are just starting out studying for the NCE, this may be a good guide to test what basic concepts you know and don't know. You can then study the basic concepts more in depth.
4. The guide does offer explanation for why an answer is correct, which can be helpful if you are unsure or confused.

Overall, I don't feel like it's a waste of money if you don't rely solely on this for studying. I have been using Dr. Rosenthal's Encyclopedia of Counseling, as well as his audio, which I have found to be VERY helpful so far. He gives explanations for all the correct answers, as well as reasons why other choices are not correct. The audio offers an overview of all the content areas and is like a mini-review of my grad degree.

My suggestion: Use as many practice tests and study guides as possible because they can offer insight as to the content and material that will be on the exam.

*Side note: I have yet to take the exam. I will be taking it on 4/18/15, so after I take the exam I will edit my review and comment on the material on the exam versus the material in the study guide.
