A compilation of road tests from magazines around the world. Very interesting to read diverse takes on our favorite little sports car, the NA Miata. Could be indexed a little better, and the pictures show a surprising amount of generational detail loss, but all in all a great source of historical performance data.

There are two editions of this book!

Just a note of caution:
Notice that the title Amazon lists for this book is "Mazda Miata Mx-5: Performance Portfolio 1989-1996", but the cover reads "Mazda Miata Mx-5: Performance Portfolio 1989-1997" (the difference is in the dates that are covered). There are two editions of this book, and they do have slight, but significant, differences in the contents. Although both editions are the same size (by page count), the 1997 edition adds an article or two, and deletes others. I have the 1989-96 version, and I have enjoyed reading it, but I can't help but wonder what I have been missing!

Paul Myerson has been a successful change catalyst for a variety of clients and organizations of all sizes. He has more than 25 years of experience in supply chain strategies, systems, and operations that have resulted in bottom-line improvements for companies such as General Electric, Unilever, and Church and Dwight (Arm & Hammer). Myerson holds an MBA in Physical Distribution from Temple University and a BS in Logistics from The Pennsylvania State University. He is currently Managing Partner at Logistics Planning Associates, LLC, a supply chain planning software and consulting business (www.psiplanner.com). Myerson serves as an adjunct professor at several universities, including Kean University and New Jersey City University. He is the author of a Windows-based Supply Chain Planning software, and co-author of a new Lean supply chain and logistics management simulation training game by ENNA.

Powerful Lean Tool for You

Paul Myerson has achieved a perfect balance between academic theory and practical real actionable examples and templates for the reader. The easy read and informative narrative and illustrative style makes it a practical learning and reference tool for the professional beginner, the classroom student and for the experienced lean champion. Paul Myerson's "Lean Supply Chain and Logistics Management" clearly demonstrates that lean is alive and well in the warehouse, on the shipping docks and in the procurement offices, in addition to the traditional factory floor.

This is NOT another supply chain book .. you can actually use it!

As a former professor of supply chain and a current practitioner, this book tells me that supply chain has come a long way. This book strings together topics that are necessary to make lean operations successful. Some books cover at a high level without being practical .. but this one has practitioner in mind. From value stream mapping through metrics, every step guides you in implementing the lean way. The House of Lean depicts all topics and their relationships in one picture.

And there are some unique aspects that takes the topis one step further. For example, most companies and major consulting firms do not recognize the differences between cycle and processing time. And these differences have significant impact on bottlenecks and capacity decisions, and more importantly on lead time related metrics. Time-based competition is the last frontier for companies to differentiate when product differentiation is becoming less of a sustainable strategy.

The book does not leave out the staple topics such as value stream mapping. The examples are clear and shows the value of these standard techniques. Finally, no book on management is complete without metrics. There are case studies in the book to demonstrate the value of these techniques. The author has done justice on these topics as well.

Style of writing: humor all through. Makes it easier for reading.

If you are starting a project or do a good bit of work on supply chain improvement, process improvement / harmonization - this is a handy book to have.

Paul Myerson's Lean Supply Chain and Logistics Management is a pragmatic, no-nonsense outlay of lean supply chain and logistics management for today's globally competitive environment. It is truly a refreshing discussion of the topic without the clutter and lexicon that books of this type sometimes contain.

The book is particularly advantageous for those organizations with lean programs who want to employ cross-functional teams to improve and add efficiency to their logistics operations. Of note in the book's 16 Chapters are the numerous real-life examples and case studies used to demonstrate principles and points that the book teaches. In addition, the book has several tools and aids to be used in group settings to foster learning and development within a logistics or other operations department.

I'd be hard pressed to find anyone within the logistics industry, or the classroom, or otherwise, who does not keep this book on their shelf to refer to again and again, after they've read it, used it and shared it with others. I highly recommend Department Heads as well as University instructors consider its use to engage their teams and classrooms in lean supply chain logistics, without a long drawn out curriculum to follow. This book is a true keeper!

Patricia Cohen is a New York Times reporter covering culture and ideas. She has also worked at Rolling Stone, the Washington Post, and New York Newsday.

Stephen G. West (PhD, University of Texas at Austin) is Professor of Quantitative and Social Psychology at the University of Arizona. His current quantitative research interests include field research methods, structural equation modeling, multiple regression analysis, mediational analysis, graphics and exploratory data analysis, and longitudinal data analysis. Current social psychology research interests include personality research, applied social, prevention-related issues in health, mental health. He is the editor ofPsychological Methods, published by APA.

Leona S. Aiken (PhD, Purdue University)is Professor and Chair of Social and Quantitative Psychology at Arizona State University. Her research interests include both quantitative methods and health psychology. In quantitative methods, she is known for her work in continuous variable interactions in multiple regression.She is also interested in the use of design approaches and mediational analysis to untangle the effects of individual components in multi-component interventions. In health psychology, she is interested in adoption of health protective behaviors across the life span, particularly among women, both from the perspectives of psychosocial models of the putative determinants of health protective behavior and from the perspective of interventions to increase health protective behavior.

Eliot A. Cohen is the Robert E. Osgood Professor of Strategic Studies at the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) of the Johns Hopkins University and founding director of the Philip Merrill Center for Strategic Studies there. A graduate of Harvard College, he received his Ph.D. in political science at Harvard in 1982. After teaching at Harvard and at the Naval War College (Department of Strategy) he served on the policy planning staff of the Office of the Secretary of Defense, coming to SAIS in 1990. His most recent book is "Supreme Command: Soldiers, Statesmen, and Leadership in Wartime" (Free Press, 2002): other books include (with John Gooch) "Military Misfortunes: The Anatomy of Failure in War". In 1991-93 he directed the US Air Force's official multi-volume study of the 1991 Gulf War, the "Gulf War Air Power Survey". He has served as an officer in the United States Army Reserve, and as a member of the Defense Policy Advisory Board of the Office of the Secretary of Defense as well as other government advisory bodies.

The primary textbook I consult for regression work

This is one of the best applied statistics books I've come across. It's particularly good in its coverage of continuous by continuous variable interactions in regression as well as considering basic issues of hypothesis testing in multivariate regression. I also appreciate its discussion of historical traditions which have lead some fields to be more dependent upon regression and some more ANOVA. I haven't seen one other text that comes even close.

It can be a little difficult to connect with contemporary statistics software (e.g. Stata) and terminology at times. For example, they refer to a technique called Fisher's Protected Least Square Difference Test, which I believe to be the same a joint significance in more common regression parlance, but it is hard to confirm. These type of problems are to be expected with different fields using different terms.

One negative reviewer complains that this book is difficult. This depends on what kind of text one is comparing it to. For the deep level of very useful information that it covers, it is the most readable text I've encountered.

Excellent for practicing social scientists

This is an excellent book for social scientists that run regressions. The book's focus in practical and has good discussions on violation of regression assumptions. This edition is actually an updated combination of a book by Cohen & Cohen's and a book by Aiken & West. The latter book has been heavily cited for its discussion of moderation analysis. I would complement this book with Wooldridge's excellent Introductory Econometrics: A Modern Approach (with Economic Applications, Data Sets, Student Solutions Manual Printed Access Card), which covers similar ground but with an economics focus.

About the Author
Rudolfo Anaya, widely acclaimed as one of the founders of modern Chicano literature, is professor emeritus of English at the University of New Mexico. Anaya was presented with the National Medal of Arts for literature in 2001 and his novel Alburquerque (the city's original Spanish spelling) won the PEN Center West Award for Fiction. He has also received the Premio Quinto Sol, the national Chicano literary award, the American Book Award from The Before Columbus Foundation, the Mexican Medal of Friendship from the Mexican Consulate, and the Western Literature Association's Distinguished Achievement Award. He is best known for the classic Bless Me Ultima.

Real, authentic life stories from a true Latino writer.

Rudolfo Anaya has a remarkable way of telling a stroy from the eyes of person that grew up in the southwest. Rudolfo's descriptions of the life and strugles of his characters always make reminds me of my child hoood while growing up in that culture. His books tell it like it is or was and the Heart of Aztlan is no exception. It is a plesure to read a book from an author who takes his characters from real life experiences. If you want to see life through a Hispanic growing up in the southwest read Heart of Aztlan.

Pretty Good

This was a pretty good book. Anaya tells a shifting story about the Chavez family moving away from ther land in Guadalupe and adapting to an urban life in a 1950s New Mexico barrio. Anaya gives a fairly convincing account of chicano lifestlye in the barrio. He describes all aspects of the chicano culture, even a bit of superstition and magic. Beyond all this, Anaya's novel includes a kalediscope of happenings that make it very easy to just read without stopping. There's a lot more to it than simply reflecting on the barrio culture. It is interesting, enjoyable and definately worth reading.

A Novel With Something to Say

I know that when Heart of Aztlan came out it was pretty well bashed by the critics. Admittedly, it isn't up to the level of Anaya's best work (i.e. Bless Me, Ultima), and its flaws are pretty obvious. It's an unbalanced novel. So much space of the novel is spent following Jason and his struggles in a school that devalues him and his culture, and his story seems quite unfinished at the end of the novel. The magical realism is fine and important but is so suddenly introduced in the novel as to feel an intrusion. I've no problem with the presence or the shape of politics in this novel, but I did feel that Anaya was a little heavy-handed in its treatment. The beginning half of the novel is, to be honest, pretty dull.

And yet, despite these frustrations I have with the book, it has a lot of merit. There is a lot of heart in this story. The loss of land; the struggles of being caught up in the dehumanizing crush of work in the train yards and life in the city; the hopelessness and self-hatred that can be acquired in the schools; the strains that being poor, powerless, and marginalized can press upon a family; the sad plight of the family who is ostracized from even their own community--each of these struggles is vividly and compassionately depicted in the novel. And working against these forces is Clemente's rising consciousness, and the myths that he is coming to embody and invoke. When I get to the novel's ending (I won't give it away), it feels really right and really feels like something has been said in this book. The ending feels artistic, mythically charged, and you leave the novel with a sense of urgency, the desire to work toward a more just world.

So, it's not a perfect novel, not for everyone's taste, but it is, ultimately, a worthwhile novel, with something to say.

No one told the Bruins, though, and when they showed up for practice, the basketball floor was down over their ice, and "Pearl Jam [was] happily immersed in a vigorous game of b-ball." Beantown media "chastised the band for pulling celebrity rank," but in a defining gesture, head Jammer Eddie Vedder later hung around the Bruins' locker room until he was invited in. Flawed and Biased Coverage

I was a huge PJ fan in their early years, stuck with them in the "middle" years, and became a huge fan again recently when they released the 72 live bootlegs (I have 'em all and am still trying to listen to all of them). With this new interest I decided to read this book. I loved learning more about the history of the band, but the way the author constructed the book is flawed and biased. First of all, the only band member to make significant contributions is former drummer Dave Abbruzzese, who's a cool guy but he got fired from the band back in 1994. Some very old interviews with Stone, Mike, Jeff, and Eddie are used as background, but clearly the author did not consult them extensively, or else they chose not to participate (more likely). Thus you get extensive coverage of Abbruzzese but nothing about key group members Jeff, Stone, and Mike except some very vague personality descriptions and second hand opinions from other people.
Then there's the coverage of Eddie Vedder, who clearly did not make any direct contributions to the book. Kim Neely's only direct contact with him were some early interviews she did for Rolling Stone. Neely's attitude toward Vedder is difficult to comprehend and is a major flaw in the book. Early in the book, despite calling Vedder a "shrimp" at one point, Neely seems to like him and thinks he's a great guy. But as the book progresses, Neely increasingly tries to belittle Vedder and is determined to cut his public image down to size. This is especially true in the section on Eddie's upbringing, in which his painful family life is described. About the only source used for this section is Eddie's stepfather Peter, whom Eddie has often vilified in the press. I feel that Peter is a good guy and that Eddie has been unfair to him. But then again, Neely is attempting to research the past to create a true psychological thesis on Eddie's personality and emotions, and it is downright irresponsible to try to do this without talking to the person you're writing about. So Neely has failed to illuminate Eddie's lyrics and public persona with this so-called psychological research, and only comes across as a muckraker with some sort of score to settle. I wonder what Eddie did to Neely in real life, besides ignoring her. Plus, why not get into the backgrounds of the other guys this extensively? Aren't they interesting enough?
Another big flaw is the problem that sinks many biographies and history books - ignoring recent history and glorifying the good old days. The period of the band's formation, and up to around 1993, is covered in ridiculous detail, while everything since then is glossed over so quickly that you'd think nothing interesting happened. The best evidence of this is Neely's descriptions of each PJ album. Every single song on "Ten" is described in detail, including the sound, the lyrics, and the songwriting process. Most songs on "Vs" are described, and a few on "Vitalogy" are detailed while the rest are sped through in a few vague sentences. And then the albums "No Code" and "Yield" (the most recent at the time of the book) are given just one paragraph each with very brief descriptions of just a few selected songs.
The story is mostly entertaining, but it is hard to take the writer and the structure of the book seriously. And if you're interested in the band's recent history in any way, you're gonna have to go elsewhere.

An informative read

Although Five Against One is the only Pearl Jam book I have ever read I would still recommend it to any hardened Pearl Jam fan. Written by Kim Neely(a reporter that knows what she's talking about) the book covers Everything from Jeff's upbringing to the release of the 'Given to Fly single. The book devotes two chapters around about mid-book to the complete life story of Eddie Vedder. This basically answers all the questions you have about his past which is shrouded in mystery. The only negative thing about the book I found was that although it covered the release of their first album 'Ten' and the following European tour, it says less and less about each successive album as it progresses, No Code only has about a page written on it! Apart from that it is full of lots of interesting facts like how the noise of drumsticks clattering at the end of 'Rear View Mirror' is really when Dave Abbruzzese chucks a tantrum, and that the band is not really named after Eddie's Grandmother. What really enlightened me about reading the book was how poorly Dave was treated by the rest of the band and how it is perhaps the greatest shame that he was ever dropped. If you want to know all about Pearl Jam's battle's with Ticketmaster, their relationship with Nirvana etc. I suggest you pick up a copy of this fabulous book. Hadleigh Brownie 28/4/99

Open your eyes, this book is NOT the "unvarnished truth"

It's a shame that so many of the reviews here are by people who have confused negativity with the truth. Neely's book is not well researched, nor is it especially accurate. All of her sources were slanted against the band, and I noticed a number of factual errors in the text. Maybe someday someone will write a bio of Pearl Jam that tells the real story, but this isn't it.
