Literacy in the Digital University: Critical perspectives on learning, scholarship and technology (Research into Higher Education)From R

Literacy in the Digital University is an innovative volume bringing together perspectives from two fields of enquiry and practice: ‘literacies and learning’ and ‘learning technologies’. With their own histories and trajectories, these fields have seldom overlapped either in practice, theory, or research. In tackling this divide head on, the volume breaks new ground. It illustrates how complementary and contrasting approaches to literacy and technology can be brought together in productive ways and considers the implications of this for practitioners working across a wide range of contexts.

The book showcases work from well-respected authorities in the two fields in order to provide the foundations for new conversations about learning and practice in the digital university. It will be of particular relevance to university teachers and researchers, educational developers and learning technologists, library staff, university managers and policy makers, and, not least, learners themselves, particularly those studying at post-graduate level.

The Perfect Dictatorship: China in the 21st Century, by Stein Ringen

The Chinese system is like no other known to man, now or in history. This book explains how the system works and where it may be moving.

Drawing on Chinese and international sources, on extensive collaboration with Chinese scholars, and on the political science of state analysis, Stein Ringen concludes that under the new leadership of Xi Jinping, the system of government has been transformed into a new regime radically harder and more ideological than the legacy of Deng Xiaoping. China is less strong economically and more dictatorial politically than the world has wanted to believe.

By analyzing the leadership of Xi Jinping, the meaning of "socialist market economy," corruption, the party-state apparatus, the reach of the party, the mechanisms of repression, taxation and public services, and state-society relations, The Perfect Dictatorship broadens the field of China studies, as well as the fields of political economy, comparative politics, development, and welfare state studies.

Review

A new interpretation of the Chinese party-state―shows the advantage that derives from a comparative theorist looking at the Chinese system.

(Tony Saich, Harvard University)

This is an excellent book which asks important questions about China's future. In a lively and persuasive manner, the author vividly analyzes key data in a comparative and theoretical manner. Far and away the best introduction to how the CCP dictatorship works.

(Edward Friedman, University of Wisconsin-Madison)

There is no lack of scholars and pundits abroad who tell us that dictatorship in China is for the greater good. In a timely and engagingly written book, Stein Ringen systematically demolishes all the components of this claim.

(Frank Dikötter, University of Hong Kong)

Ringen provides a wealth of information regarding Chinese leadership and policies in a style that doesn't assume prior knowledge, thereby making it accessible to a wide range of readers interested in the region.Library Journal

(Library Journal)

Mr. Ringen explodes this favorite propaganda slogan [that Beijing has lifted hundreds of millions of people out of poverty] even further and does so with the fresh eyes he promises.

(Howard W. French Wall Street Journal)

About the Author

Stein Ringen is emeritus professor at the University of Oxford. He brings to this study extensive experience of state analysis in America, Britain, Scandinavia, Europe, and Korea. He is the author, most recently, of Nation of Devils: Democratic Leadership and the Problem of Obedience.

This is a timely book that produces insightful conclusions drawn ...
By Denis
This is a timely book that produces insightful conclusions drawn from objective observations and research evidence obtained through the writer's associates, friends, connections and government or party officials in China.

Born 50 years ago and educated in Hong kong, I have been living and working here all along. I have found this book has presented objectively, with the support of evidence, the observations and the current situation in today's China, that most mainlanders and even Hongkongers have been already well aware of, but many of them have chosen to turn a blind eye to them or have decided to refuse to accept them by saying that all these have been fabricated by some people with ill intention.

This book has helped me clear some doubts as to why the party-state always uses heavy-hand approach to subdue civil right activists, though many of them just employing gentle attitude and mild actions. In addition, it also explains why after 2012 when Xi Jinping took over the helm, he has been tightening control within CCP, in different aspects of the society, and on every level of government, including, recently, applying unprecedented controls on some cornerstones of Hong kong in defiance of strong oppositions from Hongkongers.

Lately, he has solidified the political, military and economic powers into his ownself alone as the core of the party-state, making himself comparable with Deng Xiaoping and Mao Zedong. The book also provides a logical reason behind Xi's move to concentration of powers.

Though the book's conclusions are critical and maybe objectionable to the pro Beijing Chinese, it helps many understand more why the leaders of the party-state have done what have been done to their countrymen in wake of the era of Mao, which might be, sadly but angrily to say, necessary from the point of view of CCP for their ambition to maintain its perpetual leadership in China.

Overestimating China, Underestimating its Leaders
By David Wineberg
This monograph of China explains the entire government structure, including naming all the opaque black boxes in the schema. It lays out the rankings, the social services, the offices, the departments, and most importantly, the guiding principles of all of them - The Party. It is comprehensive, realistic, and most of all, revealing. China is not doing nearly as well as it says or we think.

Ringen says the present nihilistic, materialistic, money grubbing state of China is a direct result of the Tiananmen Square crackdown in 1989. At that time the Chinese believed they were on an upward curve, but The Party/state informed them in no uncertain terms that freedom was not and never would be available to the Chinese. “The economy is for the state; it is not for the other way around,” Ringen says. As long as the perception is that China is growing at near double digit rates, people and business are pacified, and The Party can flourish. That is why the official statistics are all lies.

Like any garden variety dictatorship, China is paranoid. There are files on literally everyone. There are untold numbers of different police forces, operating thuggishly and plainclothesed. Local officials are promoted on the basis of their intelligence gathering. Local housewives are community spies. Photocopy stores feed directly to intelligence services. Arrest and unlimited detention do not require charges, and when they come, they are often bizarre and clearly not in violation of any law. Nonetheless, people are sometimes held for life, their families evicted, and if they had students, they can be jailed and tortured too. Nothing can interfere with the ethos The Party wants for China. Ringen’s longest most detailed chapter concerns such cases of arrest or censorship. It seems that China’s whole internal focus is to prevent people coming together. Any concerted effort from anywhere is crushed, often before it can act. That is how thorough and subversive the intelligence gathering is. The country can afford over a million people censoring the internet, but it won’t allow people driven from the countryside to the cities the same social rights as city dwellers. Ringen says China has performed remarkably poorly in raising living standards, compared to other countries such as South Korea or even Britain when compared from the same starting point in 1949. The Party, however, has performed miracles for its members. Ringen estimates the state skims more than half and possibly two-thirds of GDP. It clearly does not give that much back. Taxes are oppressive, and daily corruption adds to the burden.

The bulk of the book examines the structures in place: the tax structure, the safety net, the justice system, the hukou residency system, the class system, and of course, The Party, for which everything else has been built. Ringen says China is not there for its people (a welfare state) and it is not there for its vision (ideological state). It is there purely to support, sustain and promote The Party, which he calls a “trivial state” – no greater purpose.

Ringen cautions that we might be at common turning point, one we always miss. The rise of the Nazis, the rise of the USSR – and maybe now China. The parallels are eerily similar. We have long, and continue to pretend, that China is moving towards liberalization and democracy. It isn’t. It is moving to secure the future of The Party, and that does not involve either democracy or liberalization, he says. The leadership makes no bones about it. The sooner we start taking the official words of Chinese leaders literally, the better we will be positioned to deal with the fallout.

Fascinating
By Autamme_dot_com
China is a fascinating country with a very interesting political and economic system that is often inscrutable to outsiders. This book sets out to explain how things work in the country today and seek to guess how things will be in the future.

The system may be protected by a façade or misunderstanding, aided perhaps by a spate of good fortune. The author believes that the government today is a relatively hard-line regime that is less strong economically and more dictatorial politically than the world has wanted to believe. This reviewer doesn’t know, but the author seemingly knows his stuff and puts forward a sensitive, powerful and engaging series of arguments to sustain his position. It brings forth a number of interesting questions and observations against the Chinese state which, at worst case, could translate into traumatic economic actions and maybe even civil disturbances. The author goes against the grain and does not agree that the existing system works for the common Chinese good, even if it may appear different to western eyes.

The Chinese economy is large and there has been massive economic growth, yet the economy has not transformed into a strong, structured and sustainable system. Question marks exist as to whether it has been built on a weak, questionable structure that may fall down like the proverbial house of cards in the future. If it should happen, the reverberations both internally and externally will be long-ranging. Are the current leaders really leading, or clinging on with a harsh, dictatorial style, desperately trying to keep the train on its tracks? The author seems to believe that that they are struggling to keep the lid on things rather than driving the country forward with a strict, authoritarian yet benevolent style. What of the future? The author believes that there is a tug-of-war about ideologies and how they are implemented and it is far from clear which side will win.

This was a fascinating and enjoyable book that is packed full of information that provides a great overview of China and a bit of what makes the country tick. The book does not claim to have all the answers or even can develop all of the key questions, yet it does not pull its punches with what it can comment on. You don’t even need to be a “China nerd” to enjoy this book. It is more than capable of satisfying the casual, curious reader at the same time.

Better than full price but just be careful and grateful handle with love and care
By Alysha Allen
Book was worn when i got it but had all pages intact. There was highlighted areas and markings since it was rented I would expect that. Found important sections by what was already highlighted so it worked out. The worst part was the spine of the book was flimsy so I had to be extra careful with it but other than that its better paying full price for a book I'd only need to use once. I am grateful these books have been passed on for students like me that are in a bind for money.

Magnificent
By James Ramsey
Please read some of my other reviews, so that you can be sure that I am not just a paid advertizer. The fact is, I have nothing but good things to say about this book.
I am a long-time student of Tai Chi, and the discovery of this book has greatly enhanced my practice.
The book is very eclectic; it covers the major traditional forms of Tai Chi. The diagrams, though they suffer from the same fate as any diagram of martial motions, are actually fairly decent. The author also has a very simple writing style which is both pleasant to read, and very matter-of-fact.
If you know nothing about Tai Chi, and are just curious to know what it is about, then this book may be a bit much for you. I would recommend "Tai Chi for dummies" or something along those lines. If, however, you have a serious interest, then this book will be an invaluable asset, and is highly recommended.

The best Tai Chi book ever written (and I've read MANY!)
By A Customer
I am not a fan of writing or reading reviews in Amazon.com, but this book definitiely deserves the time for me to write it and for you to read it.
I have read many books on Tai Chi and this is by far the most comprehensive. The author approaches the concepts on Tai Chi and Chinese philosophy and binds them together into the practice of Tai Chi.
A little bit of history, a little bit of classics, a little bit of self interpretation.
If you are interested in deepening your knowledge of Tai Chi (regardless of the style you practice) I recommend this book to you.

International Law and the Use of Force (Foundations of Public International Law), by Christine Gray

This book explores the whole of the large and controversial subject of the use of force in international law; it examines not only the use of force by states but also the role of the UN in peacekeeping and enforcement action, and the growing importance of regional organizations in the maintenance of international peace and security.

Since the publication of the second edition of International Law and the Use of Force the law in this area has continued to undergo a fundamental reappraisal. Operation Enduring Freedom carries on against Al Qaida and the Taliban in Afghanistan six years after the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001. Can this still be justified as self-defense in the 'war on terror'? Is there now a wide right of pre-emptive self-defense against armed attacks by non-state actors? The 2006 Israel/Lebanon conflict and the recent intervention of Ethiopia in Somalia raise questions about whether the 'war on terror' has brought major changes in the law on self-defense and on regime change. The 2003 invasion of Iraq gave rise to serious divisions between states as to the legality of this use of force and to talk of a crisis of collective security for the UN. In response the UN initiated major reports on the future of the Charter system; these rejected amendment of the Charter provisions on the use of force. They also rejected any right of pre-emptive self-defense. They advocated a 'responsibility to protect' in cases of genocide or massive violations of human rights; the events in Darfur show the practical difficulties with the implementation of such a duty.

Good account of international law on the use of force
By William Podmore
Christine Gray, a Reader in International Law at Cambridge University, has written an excellent account of current international law on the use of force by states. She examines the laws banning the use of force, civil wars, self-defence, collective self-defence, the use of force against terrorism, the UN and the use of force, Security Council authorisation for the use of force, and regional peacekeeping and enforcement actions.

International law depends on the defence of nations' rights to self-determination, sovereignty and independence. She shows that the UN remains committed to the prohibition of any forcible intervention in the internal affairs of any nations.

Gray maintains that the reasoning of the International Court of Justice in Nicaragua's case against the USA in 1986 is of paramount importance in this area because it is the Court's first extended discussion of the law on the use of force. The Court found that Nicaragua had not attacked anybody, but that the US government had illegally used force and intervened in Nicaragua. The Court rejected the US claim that its Contra war was justified as `humanitarian' intervention. The US state has refused to accept the verdict.

Gray shows that the similar recent US/British attacks on Iraq and Yugoslavia were also illegal: "The use of the doctrine of implied authorization by the Security Council to justify the military action by the USA and the UK in Iraq in 1993 and 1998, by NATO in Kosovo and most recently by the USA, the UK and Australia in Operation Iraqi Freedom shows lip-service to the authority of the UN, but an unwillingness actually to accept the decisions of the Security Council."

As UN Secretary-General Kofi Anna said in 1999, "enforcement actions without Security Council authorisation threaten the very core of the international security system." On 16 September 2004, he stated that the war on Iraq was illegal. Recent UN Resolutions have not endorsed the war as legal. The illegal invasion has now become an illegal belligerent occupation.

A great introduction with thought-provoking questions to a highly complicated subject
By D. Kong
The author, Professor Chrisitine D. Gray, is Professor in International Law at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of St. John's College, Cambridge, UK. For the uninitiated, International Law is divided into Public International Law and Private International Law. Within Public International Law, there are many different areas, including the Laws of War, and within the Laws of War, there is the issue of the use of force, which is the focus of this book. There are nine chapters covering the topics of: 1. Law and force; 2. The prohibition of the use of force; 3. Invitation and intervention: civil wars and the use of force; 4. Self-defence; 5. Collective self-defence; 6. The use of force against terrorism: anew war for a new century? 7.The UN and the use of force; 8. Security Council authorization for member states to use force; and 9. Regional peacekeeping and enforcement action.

This book, published in 2008, naturally devotes large portions of its content to the discussion of use of force in the War on Terrorism. Professor Gray raises many legal issues as presented by the military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, including the questions of whether an armed attack by a non-state actor constitutes an act of aggression as defined by the International Court of Justice in the Nicaragua case, whether the prolonged U.S.-led Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan has gradually lost its self-defence (Article 51) justification and legitimacy, and whether the right of self-defence can be extended to cover pre-emptive action (Bush Doctrine). Professor Gray further points out that, over these important issues, the global community is sharply divided, with the U.S., U.K. and Israel on one side and most of the world on the other. However, even between the U.S. and U.K., we are told by Professor Gray that the two countries are not entirely on the same page over the issue of whether it is legal to forcibly intervene to overthrow a government in absence of Security Council authorization (military opertions in Iraq). The U.K., we are told, has considered that regime change cannot be the objective of military action.

This book raises many thought-provoking issues of international law. Many, if not most, of them are still unanswered or completely settled at the time of this writing, and will likely to remain unsettled for some time in the foreseeable future. For those who want to conduct further research on these issues, this book has included extensive footnotes that one would expect from a scholarly legal work. This is highly recommended as an introduction to a number of complicated and still developing issues in the area of the use of force in the Laws of War.

Good Review of International Law on Use of Force
By not me
"International Law and the Use of Force" is an up-to-date and detailed analysis of international law and state practice on the use of armed force.

The book has many virtues. It is clearly written and thorough. Unlike many American authors, the author uses examples of state practice from the UN and capitals around the world, not just from the U.S. and UK. The book is also very realistic. Unlike many leftist writers, she doesn't confuse ideals with law. She doesn't pretend, for example, that "humanitarian intervention" is now valid international law when in fact only a few countries endorse the concept. And the book cuts through cant. Unlike many rightist writers, the author doesn't believe that U.S. violations of international law in Nicaragua, Iraq or elsewhere are bold precedents establishing new legal principles. (They are just cases of lawbreaking.) The author's knowledge of contemporary international legal practice is amazing. Most of her judgments are sound and in the mainstream of international (if not American) legal thinking.

But the book has flaws, too. It will have a short shelf life. There is too much minutiae about recent conflicts in Africa and the Middle East, with too much parsing of UN resolutions and foreign ministry boilerplate. It would have been better to unpack basic legal principles and classic use-of-force cases: it is beyond me how this book (or any book on this subject) can have only passing references to the Carolina case or Israel's pre-emptive war in 1967. The author's anti-U.S. bias also gets the better of her. For example, she probes at length the legality of the U.S. presence in Afghanistan, as if the legal justification isn't clear. It is: the U.S. invaded Afghanistan under a UNSC mandate and has remained there with the permission of the Afghan government. My hunch is that the author's anger over high-handed U.S. behavior in Central America and the War on Terror has made her too eager to question any U.S. military action. This reflex is understandable but it detracts from the book's overall credibility.

But these are quibbles. "International Law and the Use of Armed Force" is excellent. It should be assigned widely in law schools. I'm sure it will be read in the legal departments of many foreign ministries.

Adak: The Rescue of Alfa Foxtrot 586, by Andrew C. A. Jampoler

In the tradition of great tales of men against the sea, Adak offers a compelling look at courage and commitment in the face of certain tragedy. Alfa Foxtrot 586 was a P-3 Orion on station on a sensitive Cold War mission off the Kamchatka Peninsula on 26 October 1978. When a propeller malfunction turned into an engine fire, the pilot was forced to ditch his turboprop into the empty, mountainous seas west of the Aleutian Islands. The aircraft went down in just ninety seconds, taking one of the three rafts with it. Thirteen men launched the other rafts, the smallest of which―terribly overcrowded―soon began to leak, threatening the nine men aboard. This account of the flight crew's desperate battle against the sea, and the heroic efforts to rescue them provide an engrossing true story of survival.

The Navy's Perfect Storm
By Henry J Hendrix II
This is a superb book about the heroism of a Navy patrol plane crew that goes down in the midst of a raging north Pacific storm, and the men who dare the elements to rescue them. A well know story within naval aviation, it is thrilling to read this riveting account, and it is great to know that many others will have the opportunity to learn this tragic yet uplifting tale. I first heard this story from one of the survivors who visited my squadron many years ago, and it dramaticly affected the way I look at my job. I recommend it to everyone.

These guys are heroes.....
By A Customer
As the son of a Navy P-3 (and sea plane) pilot and former CO of VP-9, this book hit very close to home for me. The story is well-written and extremely emotional, at least to anyone who has ever had a loved one fly in harm's way. When you're a kid, and your Dad flies Navy planes for a living, you never really consider the risks and dangers. This true story demonstrates what these men faced on a daily basis and shows how their endless training and attention to detail was essential to their survival. You wouldn't expect a Navy flyer turned author to write a tear jerker, but that is certainly what Andy Jampoler has done, at least for me. Thinking back on all those flights, all those deployments, all those "close" calls with engine failure, and realizing that it could have been my family welcoming back a box instead of a father, there simply is no way not to shed a tear of both sorrow and thanks. The men of PD-2 were heroes in the traditional sense; they did their jobs in the face of incredible danger, some losing their lives in the process. But for me, what this book really shows is that tragedy doesn't make heroes. For every Jerry Grigsby, Ed Caylor and John Ball, there were thousands of other Navy officers and men who were just a much heroes. In this time of war, it's important to remember that.

When you were there...the book takes on a new meaning.
By Dean B. Sinerius
I was a mechanic with VP-9 when PD-02 went down off of the coast of Russia and went on to become a flight engineer with the Golden Eagles and had the opportunity to fly with Ed Caylor on a number of occasions. I knew most of the crew members personally and most all of the other people mentioned in the book. I was very young when we lost 5 of our crew members in the Pacific and the event had a huge impact on me. The book is very accurate and well written. It's great reading for aviation buff's and a must read for anyone that was part of VP-9.
