love anna but too many mistakes

Bought anna's book because I have done a lot of projects off her blog and wanted to support her. Wood working is a fairly precise activity, if you are off by even a little you can have a very misshapen final project. With that said she has numerous errors, the worst being the adirondack chair (stringer should be 26 3/8 inch not 24 1/4 inch). At least 3 builds have the wrong shopping lists. I even contacted her awhile ago and still no response clarifying the measurements. She should at least put the corrections on her blog. The idea of this book is to make building things easy and cheap. This doesn't happen if you have to go back to the hardware store 3 times and buy extra wood because you made the wrong cuts or bought a 6 foot board instead of an 8 foot board. Returning the book and will just stick with her blog. Would also agree with other reviewers that there is very little new content in book vs her blog. Save your money and just go to her website.

A good book, but........

I do a lot of woodworking and furniture making. My wife suggested I get this book for the plans related to kids furniture. The book is well written and easy to follow. However, when I followed the shopping list and began to build the play table I realized one 8 foot long 1x3 was not enough for this project. With the children's chair, only one 8 foot 2x2 was required, not the 2 specified in the shopping list. Also, the shopping list specifies 2 1/2 inch pocket screws. No where in the instructions does it say where to use them. If the book is intended for non-woodworkers as stated, errors of this type can confuse the beginner.

You can build furniture, yes, you!

I have followed Ana almost since she started blogging, and have built several pieces of furniture already. In this book, you aren't going to find complicated building methods like you see in the woodworking magazines - you can literally be a person who has never swung a hammer, and after following Ana's simple directions, you will be building in no time. Also, you don't need any expensive tools to build most of what she has in the book. The photos and design is gorgeous, and it's nothing but plans. I'm excited to get back to building!

You can't miss a moose

"Collins Field Guide to Mammals of Britain and Europe" covers 200 mammal species found in Europe. The colour plates are quite good. The plates and the text are not on facing pages, however. Distribution maps are included.

My main objection to this field guide is that it claims to cover "Western Europe" without defining what Western Europe means. Some of the species covered can only be found in Italy, the Balkans or Greenland!

Many of the mammals covered are well known European species: wolf, brown bear, reindeer, moose or beaver. More surprising, perhaps, are the golden jackal and the Barbary ape. Even more surprising is the inclusion of the red-necked wallaby, an Australian marsupial found at two locations in Britain. Apparently, they escaped from captivity (who wouldn't?) and found the British heaths to their liking.

Most large land mammals are common knowledge (you can't miss a moose!) but if you absolutely must identify shrews, mice or bats, this field guide is probably a must. Interestingly, it has a companion volume, called "European Mammals: Inside their lives", but I haven't seen it. It's apparently more of a natural history than a field guide, and could perhaps be of some interest as well.

Most Complete Guide to Mammals of Europe!

I have been searching for a couple years for such a book. This Collins Field Guide is the most complete and accurate guide to the mammals of this area. For example I discovered in this book that there is a species of wallaby the was introduced to Scotland. There are many beautifully illustrated plates in the guide. This is a must for any one interesed in the wildlife of Europe.

No spying required.

I purchased this book from Amazon, without being able to view any of the pictures inside. The title led me to believe my daughter would be searching for letters amid a jumble of other pictures, (like a "Where's Waldo" for the alphabet!) but sadly, that is not the case. Each page features only two jumbo-sized letters, and the rhyming prose discusses the designs or patterns featured on the letters. This is NOT a book that requires your little one to play "I spy" or to hunt for letters. This is just another book about letters for parents to read to their kids. While there's certainly nothing wrong with reading books to children, I feel this book is purposefully deceptive in its marketing. Thus, the low rating.

I spy a letter sitting right in front of me....

Sadly, there is nothing to spy in this book. Nothing is hidden, the letters are just right there. Just sitting there on a blank, white page. No searching whatsoever.

The age range for this book is listed as 3-5. Wrong. My 2-year old isn't even amused.

So, if you are looking for a letter book, I do think this one is nice, but don't buy this if you are expecting the typical "I Spy" format.

My 2 year old loves the classic I spy with the cluttered pages. These pages are too sparse, with only 3 to 5 large items per page so my 2 year was easily bored.

Don't Go See This Play On A First Date

This is not a horrible play, but it is a horrible play to see on a first date. I made that mistake. I saw it back in the 80s off broadway in New York. I scored great tickets, first row. The theater was small and the stage was not set in an arch or elevated.
One of the charactors/props in the play was a live orphaned baby lamb kept in a baby playpen at the front of the stage. The lamb kept licking our fingers during the play and was very cute. So far so good, this first date was going ok. I was scoring points with the girl I was with.
Then the drama started. The family portrayed is disfunctional and under incredible stress. The violence increases and increases. Yelling, fighting--I don't want to spoil things for you, but things don't turn out well for the lamb at the end (for you PETA folks out there--through the use creative F/Xs no living lamb was hurt in the production). End result for me--not a very good first date. It was a better read.

Disguised Gem

Sam Shepard has created a beautiful story of a poor family struggling to keep their home, relationships, and sanity. His amazing symbols keep the reader thinking, and this proves to be a play that is much more than surface deep. I especially enjoyed his themes on class and destiny, as well as his ideas on family and rebirth. For me, this book was amazingly written and intriquingly complex; its tragedies make the reader reevaluate his/ her own life. It made me laugh out loud, but in addition to being funny, it was enlightening, symbolic, provocative.

The blue collar Wild West, a la Sam

I had not read Shepard in many a moon, and it was good to check back into his strange version of America. This was written during his peak period (his recent stuff, most of which I have not read, is not as highly regarded), and like many of his other good ones, it concerns a squabbling family in the Southwest. The title and some of the dialogue indicates that Shepard viewed the travails of this clan as symptomatic of being part of the great white working class - and travails there are: alcoholism, violence, living with poverty breathing down their necks, smart alecky kids, a confused mother, a drunken, headstrong father. Parts of it are absurd and funny, but ultimately this is no comedy.

The play begins with the son Wesley, trying to repair the door his father, Weston, has smashed to bits in a drunken rage. The refrigerator is empty - there is a lot of action concerning the refrigerator and food. This is clearly a family in disarray. Both the parents are trying to sell the house out from under each other. The father is tough and dynamic, but seriously cracked, and much of the play concerns the other characters tiptoeing around and trying to figure out how to handle him. Most of the dialogue is standard American white trashese. There are a couple of monologs which, for me anyway, were not as effective. This was a good one. I would like to see it performed someday. It might be a little difficult though - the script calls for a live lamb.

Robert V. Kail is Distinguished Professor of Psychological Sciences at Purdue University. His undergraduate degree is from Ohio Wesleyan University, and his Ph.D. is from the University of Michigan. Kail is editor of Child Development Perspectives and the editor emeritus of Psychological Science. He received the McCandless Young Scientist Award from the American Psychological Association, was named the Distinguished Sesquicentennial Alumnus in Psychology by Ohio Wesleyan University, and is a fellow of the Association for Psychological Science. This fascinating book provides a current, thougth-provoking and deeply informative insight into the minds of childdren and how they develop in out modern-day society. I plan to use it in my curicculum this spring at my department of teaching, along with Genie:A Scientific Tragedy. The book is quite interesting, and it was a pleasure to read-I have already started making plans to contact the author to show my approval.

I know it's petty, but I like a textbook to have a bit of color; it just helps keep you awake, in my opinion. This book has lots of full color pictures as well as different font colors for headings etc. But one of my favorite features, is that it comes "pre-highlighted": important vocab is in blue, bold, and italics with its definition in black bold, and important concepts are put in the margin in a larger font in blue. It's also VERY well organized. Each chapter is divided into modules, and each module is organized by heading systems that make it really easy to find what you want again if you need to go back. Plus, there are little helps like thought questions and story vignettes; and each chapter ends with a summary and some practice questions, as well as a mini-index for page numbers for key terms from that chapter in particular.

More important than formatting (which is important in my opinion), the writing is clear and easy to follow, even fun at times. The writer uses a very casual, first-person style, which makes the whole experience more down-to-earth and accessible. True, I imagine there are more in-depth textbooks on this subject out there, but if you're just taking a survey/intro course like I am (one of my last electives, hoorah!), this is the perfect amount of depth. Enough to teach you a lot, but without being overly technical or bogged with excessive detail. If I wanted to go into extreme detail, I could have majored in this; to just learn the basics, this is perfect! I actually used this textbook as a "treat" in my studying repertoire, saving it for last after I covered my more tedious textbooks. I knew I could read this even if I was tired and still have good comprehension and attention levels, and I actually have really enjoyed the material. I even found myself reading portions that weren't assigned for my class, just because I found it interesting!

Decent textbook

Initially I was most impressed with my purchase because it was listed in "good" condition but was in fact in excellent condition. I was very pleased with the deal I got for this required textbook. That said, I have quite enjoyed using this text to learn more about a topic I find very interesting, as well. My one complaint, though, is that Kail sometimes goes above and beyond the concept of an example. Perhaps it is my own reading style or comprehension level, but when I need to read two chapters in short order, I find it unfortunate that I spend much of my time skimming through or skipping over lengthy analogies. Kail makes a lot of excellent points and can distill some big concepts into digestible portions, but I think a lot of the chapters could use some streamlining. Conversely, I also think there are intriguing subjects and tidbits I would have enjoyed further reading on.
But it's a textbook. It isn't perfect, but at least the majority of it is easily understood.

A must read for any Business Leader

"When Cultures Collide: Leading Across Cultures" by Richard D. Lewis is a fascinating study of people from 90 countries across 10 groups of cultures from all over the World. His meticulous study relates to: A. Different Countries in Different Worlds; B. Managing and Leading Different Cultures and C, Getting to Know Each Other. In this section he takes us through the 10 different cultural groups spreading from North to South and East to West.

Having visited or worked in 31 of the 94 countries, over the last three decades, in my business career, I can relate totally with what Richard Lewis writes about. The details given in the book are startlingly real. In each country we read about their history. The cultures and values are given their due respect. Concepts of Leadership and Status are described to readers, so that one understands how important these are to achieve a successful business relationship. This continues into sections on Cultural Factors in Communication that are a true benchmark for anyone who is learning on how and what to do in such complex environments.

The importance of understanding the basis cultures and values in countries where, say Europeans, have either migrated some years back or gone there to take up a position, is addressed with knowledge and understanding. In my experience working in African, Asian and Latin American countries, one cannot overemphasize the importance of what Richard Lewis writes about.

An Encyclopedia for Cross-Cultural, Interpersonal Adaptability

When Cultures Collide is a handy cross-cultural reference book to have when you are required to adapt interpersonally in order to get things done with others from around the globe. I've been fortunate to travel around the world and LIVE (not just visit) on four continents. A cursory review of Lewis' written observations of those cultures 8've interactex with proved insightful. I've not yet worked out how to read the Communication Pattern diagrams, though, which was a key feature of why I bought the book. It would have proved helpful if Lewis provided an up front, user friendly explanation of how these "work."

Tables only enlarge on iPad- but not on Android tablet!

I saw this book reviewed in a professional journal, and I felt the tabular matter would be of great use in my international business. The text is excellent, the insights rich. However, purchasing the Kindle edition for my Android tablet turned out to be problematic: the tables are only viewable in extreme reduction and cannot be enlarged. The ancient and bulky iPad I own seems to enlarge the tables OK, though the they are a bit blurry and lower res. I'll certainly find the content rich, but the publisher should either revise the Kindle Android edition to allow viewing of the very useful tables, or provide an appendix of readable tables for those of us who don't live in Apple world.

Ignorant Bible-thumper is boring

The author uses no facts nor figures to back up any criticism The New Atheism has to say. Page after page is nothing more than right-wing hate-filled propaganda against people that use science and reason to govern their lives. His arguments go something like this: "An invisible man is much more believeable than science, so stop questioning it!" For ignorant people that believe in mythology Marshall will make you thump your Bible, for the rest of us, just use reason.

David Marshall's analysis of New Atheist arguments

"The Truth Behind the New Atheism" is David Marshall's introduction to the radical Ontological Naturalist worldview
of the New Atheists.

Prominent among the New Atheist authors are Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, Christopher Hitchens, Daniel Dennett.
These are those whom Richard Dawkins identifies as "The Four Horsemen" of New Atheism.

Other popular authors who endorse the radical worldview of New Atheism are Richard Carrier, Victor Stenger, and John W. Loftus.

Some of the strange advocacies in the bestselling New Atheist literature
are such strange ideas as the following:

(a) The entire universe was created as a "computer simulation" by a "vastly superior civilization" prior to the Big Bang.
(That is the argument presented by Richard Dawkins on the last two pages of chapter two of "The God Delusion".)
(b) "Religion poisons everything." ( published by Christopher Hitchens, absent supporting toxicological data)
(c) The claim that citizens in the United States can "kill people" that they cannot "talk to". (published by Sam Harris in "The End of Faith"
(d) Claims that God does not exist. (published by Daniel Dennett, whose arguments, by the author's indication, are not themselves, based upon logic.
(e) Claims by Richard Carrier, that "good" exists, absent scientific evidence which supports the conclusion.

And so on and so forth.

David Marshall's own analysis and exposition on the New Atheist phenomenon is a very worthwhile read.

. Moreover, David Marshall's address of this worldview has been the subject of a kind of "hate campaign" and it has been very odd to see it; because there seems to have been no hate campaign directed against such authors as:

J. P. Moreland, Ph.D, Craig L. Blomberg, Ph.D., John F. Haught, Ph. D.,

Edward Feser, Ph.D., David Berlinski, Ph.D., Nigel Brush, Ph.D.

Michael Ruse, Ph.D., David Gardner Ph.D., Stephen M. Barr Ph.D.

All of the above authors have standing in their knowledge discipline,
and yet, oddly enough, no hate campaign was ever directed against these scholars,
all of whom have been sharply critical of the New Atheist worldview for its philosopnical shortcomings
or its scientific shortcomings.

David Marshall's presentation of historical facts regarding the Christian Religion is in my opinion,
the greatest strength of the book.

David Marshall does address certain advocacies of the New Atheists and the author
demonstrates the difficulties that their radical arguments present for modern people.

Marshall demonstrates certain inconsistences in the context of history and shows effectively
that many of the central claims of the New Atheist are logically incoherent or nonfactual.
