Hard Questions, Real Answers, by William Lane Craig

Why doesn’t God answer my prayers? If God is so powerful, why does evil exist? And if He is so good, why do we suffer?

Nonbelievers, and even Christians, are often troubled by questions about suffering, doubt, failure, and unanswered prayer. Yet careful, compassionate answers are hard to find, in part because evangelicals have not taken the life of the mind seriously enough. The intellectual currents of our day are just too strong for simplistic responses.

In Hard Questions, Real Answers, William Lane Craig doesn’t offer trite phrases or pat answers—he offers honest insights gained from a life of study and ministry. Readers in the midst of doubt and confusion will find real answers to these perplexing questions and learn to stand on the only sure foundation for hope—God Himself. This expanded new edition includes chapters on abortion and homosexuality to help readers know how to think about these volatile social issues.

Even the layman can understand it
By E. Johnson
With 2 Ph.D.'s in his hip pocket and many scholarly writings to his name, William Lane Craig could go through life as a pompous ivory tower dweller. Instead, Craig has made himself available to the common man. From the information he provided Strobel in his layperson works to works like Hard Questions, Craig is understandable for any Christian willing to hear. This is a simple, 8-chapter book that hits issues like doubt, unanswerer prayer, and suffering and evil that would be a benefit to anyone struggling with these issues. The book is not meant to be comprehensive, and certainly with only 8 topics, there is much left out of the book. But what is here is very concise and straightforward. I don't agree with Craig every step of the way, though I understand the process of his thinking. (If you have ever heard him debate, from atheists to Muslims, you would understand why it would be intimidating to disagree with him to his face!) Overall, I recommend this book--have it on the shelf--and when an issue comes up (such as abortion, homosexuality, or whether or not a person can reach God through Christ alone), you will be ready with good information.

Powerful and Scholarly
By David J Davis
The only reason that I haven't given this book 5 stars is because I am working under the assumption that any man-made work can be improved.

However, Craig has outdone himself with this book. Much of his earlier writing contains the same concise logic and strong argumentation, but "Hard Questions, Real Answers" accomplishes this in language anyone can understand. Perhaps this is the book's greatest strength, it does not sacrifice intellectual reasoning and Craig's ability to analyze problems from a variety of perspectives, for popular approval. I mean, it is one thing to write on the relationship of God to Time or to defend the physical resurrection of Jesus; but it is another to tackle the most complex and volatile social issues from a standpoint that is both Christian and scholarly.

Also, this book does not deal merely with 'Christian' problems. The chapters probe the depths of the modern human struggle. The chapter on failure is extremely poignant and insightful in its analysis of how one should react to and come back from personal disappointments and tragedies.

Ultimately, this book is not only a great read, it is an excellent tool for evangelism and discipleship in our postmodern world.

Don't Judge a Book by Its Cover; Take a Look at Its Author First
By Goj
"Don't judge a book by its cover." Everyone has heard that phrase a few times in their life, right? Well, this book -- which upon first sight appears to be a soft evangelical text for teenagers, ala those found in your local Christian book store -- is actually very deep in its thought, and thorough with every area it covers. That is to be expected from Dr. William Lane Craig.

Craig addresses all eight subjects covered in "Hard Questions, Real Answers" very well (the two chapters on the 'problem of evil' were simply top-notch). Contrary to another reviewer who expressed a somewhat incoherent disagreement with Craig's chapter on homosexuality, I believe Craig tackled homosexuality (which is a very difficult topic in the first place) with insight, and showed none of the alleged ignorance.

He also tells of his own personal experiences in several chapters (e.g., the conversion of his two parents nearing the end of his father's life, and how his first attempt at getting a Doctorate in theology failed, despite prayer). Besides merely illustrating a topic, personal sories such as these let the reader know that Craig has experienced and is hence familiar with at least most of the subjects he writes about in his book.

In conclusion of a brief review, this is not typically the type of book one would expect from Dr. Craig, the author of such titles as "The Kalam Cosmological Argument" and "Atheism, Theism, and Big Bang Cosmology". But it is a good read nonetheless for insightful answers to a few specific (but very significant) questions.

Landscapes: John Berger on Art, by John Berger

A major new work from the world’s leading writer on art

As leading radical writer on art John Berger celebrates his ninetieth year, he brings a lifetime's engagement with the ideas, artists, and thinkers that have shaped his thinking: Walter Benjamin, Rosa Luxemburg and Bertolt Brecht among them. In Landscapes Berger allows us to see the evolution of his own way of seeing. He explores the relationship between creativity and politics and the revolutionary potential of art through a series of different forms.

As always, in this book, Berger pushes at the limits of art writing, demonstrating beautifully how his painter’s eyes lead him to refer to himself only as a storyteller. A landscape is, to John Berger, like a portrait, an animating, liberating metaphor rather than a rigid definition. Landscapes offers a tour of the history of art, but not as you know it.

Landscapes brings together Berger's most penetrating insights into how we may engage with both art and the artist in society.

Review
“Berger is a masterful observer, a trait that lends his writing a profound element of artistry: these essays read like sketched studies of an as-yet-painted masterwork … these worldly essays are timeless, inspiring works of critical observation.”
—Kirkus

“Rich, with a broad, pluralistic approach and collaborative ethos.”
—The Art Newspaper

Praise for John Berger:

“John Berger teaches us how to think, how to feel how to stare at things until we see what we thought wasn’t there. But above all, he teaches us how to love in the face of adversity. He is a master.”
—Arundhati Roy, author of The God of Small Things

“I admire and love John Berger’s books … Not since Lawrence has there been a writer who offers such attentiveness to the sensual world with responsiveness to the imperatives of conscience. He is a wonderful artist and thinker.”
—Susan Sontag

“One of the most influential intellectuals of our time.”
—Sean O’Hagan, Observer

“Berger is a writer one demands to know more about … an intriguing and powerful mind and talent.”
—New York Times

A collection of autobiographical essays by John Berger describing his lifelong experience with art.
By pixels and bits
This is a collection of essays by John Berger that have been previously published over the duration of his lifetime. It has been collected and edited by Tom Overton, who has cataloged John Berger's archive at the British Library. These essays were chosen to describe Berger's attitudes and relationship with art. Most of the essays are just a few pages long and span his entire lifetime. As a collection, they serve as an autobiographical biography of this influential and prolific writer.

Essentially, this is a message about noticing details and the elements of story and the expression of art. Of being able to describe environment and the story behind it, developing its history. One of my favorites is a short little essay collected in a small chapter called Ten Dispatches about Place. In it he describes the landscape of a group of four burros with so much clarity that it seems like it was painted on canvas. So many of the articles and stories in this collection evoke imagery in this way.

Rocky, with some sharp declivities…
By John P. Jones III
I feel quite deficient when looking at paintings. No training in art; no wise mentor who has befriended me. I only have a rudimentary idea of what to consider. And of the varying fields of endeavor, I find art to be the hardest nut to crack on one’s own. Books on electrical wiring, for example, are comprehensible and instructive. Art criticism, on the other hand, is so often pretentious, and deliberately opaque… and there is this nagging suspicion the critic is just putting us on. Berger himself, in his critic of art museum curators, rebukes them for their elitist attitude towards the unwashed masses who view the art displayed. Nonetheless, I keep trying, and so when Vine offered me this collection of essays, I decided to try one more time.

John Berger was born 1926, and won the Booker Prize in 1972 for Ways of Seeing: Based on the BBC Television Series. This is a collection of 36 essays, described by editor Tom Overton as: “…offer(ing) a tour of the history of art, but not as you know it.” Which may be a major understatement. It seemed to me that around 10 essays had absolutely nothing to do with art, “as I know it,” but rather involved the fall of the Berlin Wall, the subsequent transformations in Eastern Europe, the stones of Palestine, and a theory of the peasant class, to name a few. The lead essay involves the author’s youthful relationship with a New Zealander, Ken, and their involvement with Krakow, Poland. “On Art” as the subtitle indicates? Hum! Absolutely the most frustrating part for me was the absence of a date indicating when the essay was written. They seemed to have been grabbed from a bottom drawer, willy-nilly. In one essay, Berger says that the peasant “class” will no longer exist in Europe in 25 years. But 25 years from when? In reading another essay, it was apparent that it was written in 1960, yet others appear to have been written within the last few years.

Berger is a Marxist, as he proclaims in the essay, “Ten Dispatches about Place,” for the 10th dispatch is a single sentence: “Yes, I’m still amongst other things a Marxist.” Again, at what date, or is it now? Of course, the reader might have derived this information on their own from the essay “Historical Afterword Into Their Labours Trilogy” from such sentences as: “Peasant conservatism, within the context of peasant experience, has nothing in common with the conservatism of a privileged ruling class or the conservatism of a sycophantic petty-bourgeoisie.” Art history and theory seems to be difficult enough on its own, but when viewed through a “Marxist dialectic,” well…

With all that said, there are some good individual essays on notables in the field. These include Frederick Antal, Max Raphael, Walter Benjamin, Ernest Fischer, and Rosa Luxemburg. This series reminded me of Clive James Cultural Amnesia: Necessary Memories from History and the Arts. One of the longer essays concerned Cubism, and its connection with other scientific and technological advances before the First World War. His most scathing criticism is reserved for art museum curators who he describes: “…but as a professional group their character is patronizing, snobbish, and lazy… (they have) the notion that they have been asked to accept as a grave civic responsibility the prestige accruing from the ownership of the works under their roof.”

I too share many of his concerns about consumerism, and the impact of megabucks searching for unique “prestige” in ownership of art. And I admire his decision to live in a small village in Haute Savoie, and write an essay on their artwork produced in the winter, described in the essay “The White Bird.” Overall, for this eclectic collection of essays on the human condition, of which art is one subset, 3-stars.

"Landscapes" is a metapor--This is a book of John Berger's essays, a "landscape" of his life & ideas about writing, art & more
By Elisa 20
(Review based on paperback ARC not the hardback--no way to evaluate price of HB or final appearance as a result)

I ordered this without any familiarity with John Berger. I saw he was described as a Marxist art critic and that he'd written several other books about art, including the similarly named "Portraits". That book, apparently is a look at the history of art with some inspiration for the journey coming from portraits. Unfortunately, reading about it, I was dismayed that the portraits were not actually shown in the book, other than as small black and white reproductions. I thought, "If a book about art history through landscape painting doesn't show the actual colors, etc. to get an idea of the original, I will be very dissatisfied with the book." How can you write about the history of art through landscape painting and not show the paintings? Imo, really, you shouldn't do that.

So when this copy came--6x9", small format to show paintings--I was relieved to see there are NO paintings reproduced in here, not as black and white photos or otherwise. This is a collection of essay, a "landscape" of Berger's thoughts on his life, people, ideas that have influenced him, writing/authors he liked and disliked and, of course, art. (I don't understand the reviewer who said it combines drawings and text. Believe me, there are essays here, and not drawings. It's a book of essays, with thoughts about many things, many aspects of art both written and visual--but there are no pictures and it would seem very odd if there were.)

I began, dutifully, with the introduction by Tom Overton. It prepared me for a book of criticism and was not an easy read. It reminded me how many years its been since I read much literary criticism. (It also reminded me that I haven't missed it.) I prepared myself for Berger's work to be more of the same.

Surprise! From the first words of his first chapter, I had a pleasant surprise--John Berger's a good writer who uses fiction techniques (including a narrative, anecdotes, vivid descriptions, characterization) in his essays. It turns out that Berger was a painter and writer until he was thirty and, in the years that followed, concentrated on writing--both fiction and non-fiction, in the latter becoming particularly well known as a critic. Don't be put off by the introduction by someone else. Berger himself is a very good writer.

These essays are interesting, scattershot through the years now collected together here, rather than being written as chapters to develop a topic or theme for a cohesively-themed book. I liked this actually, because it offered variety in both topic and tone. It's kind of a landscape--bits and pieces of different things to observe whether important people (good and bad) influencing his life (e.g. an important childhood friend, his overbearing father, a friend's suicide). He spends time with writers who influenced him (Joyce, Barthes, Marquez and others) and how, though always in a kind of "I'm telling you a story" narrative rather than a preachy one. A lot is about literature, but he writes about art and artists, too (Picasso & Braque, some from the Renaissance, the Romantics, others). Also travels and people he has met in the course of them.

As a photographer, I enjoyed the chapter "No More Portraits". To my surprise, I also enjoyed some of the quirky essay topics like "The Historical Function of the Museum". It sounds dry, but he took on the modern curators in a way that will antagonize them (but was fun to read--and may even be true). There's a lot to get out of this book that may send you looking up more about a person or topic (Rosa Luxemburg, Walter Benjamin, Berthold Brecht. He identifies himself as a Marxist but has many critical reflections on Soviet art--not a cliché.)

All in all, a well written collection of essays that could propel any interested person in a variety of directions as a result of the reading..

Project Management Based on PRINCE2 (Best Practice), by Gabor Vis van Heemst, Hans Fredriksz Bert Hedeman

An increasing number of companies are working in a project-like manner, using the PRINCE2 project management method. The advantages of a standard method are great: a uniform method of working and terminology makes projects comparable, transferable, and orderly. Moreover, PRINCE2 has additional qualities, such as the standard no go/go decision with each stage, the Business Case at the center of the project, and clear agreements about who is responsible for what. This publication will be beneficial for anyone involved in controlling, designing, or managing projects. The book gives a faithful representation of the (reviewed) PRINCE2-methodology, with many lists serving as reference material for all project types and sizes. Furthermore, the book can serve as a good basis for the PRINCE2 Foundation exams.

Extremely helpful
By Laura
I recently managed an employee who's a high conflict person (probably BPD). I learned so much from this book and it actually gave me empathy for these folks and the fact that you simply can't reason with them. They have such a hair trigger for danger and go into some sort of serious survival mode.

My employee tried to report a "hostile work environment" to HR, but I'd already been talking to HR about her for a period of time. I, also, luckily, had a strong reputation for being very empathetic, fair, and calm.

Her survival technique was to talk to my manager and manager's manager about me, when I tried to enforce any boundaries or work standards. The first time it happened, I became extrememly concerned. But by using these techniques and following the advice in this book--it's almost like she got frustrated that I wouldn't react and quit. She didn't like constructive, simple feedback and from the point I started coaching her and working w/ HR to when she quit only took about two months.

What was scary about this perons, was that she couldn't get through a sentence without twisting things or outright lieing. It's like she was contantly spinning everything to try to manipulate peopel's perception. She'd lie about things it made no sense to lie about. One week she'd storm at me and cry and be going to HR and the next week she'd ask to have lunch as if nothing happened.

I was definitely this person's "Target of Blame", and she did enlist a negative advocate to vent to, but this person ended up being very nice to me, and we get along. I don't doubt it's damaged some of my relationships, which had always been good at work.

It was one of the draining, stressful experiences I've ever been through and this book was a godsend.

I'd say if you're dealing with a high conflict person at work...get this book, read it all the way through once, and then read through slowly and really aborb the information. It works. I used the E.A.R. method, and I remembered that you can never, ever let your (understandable and justified) anger show. People with BPD in particular have preternatural attunement for emotions, though.

Next...document everything. Take time out of each day to note the date, and right down anything and everything that happened. Never be alone with the High Conflict Person and beat them to the punch. Get to HR, managers, etc. first and bring all your documentation.

Don't let on to the person in any way that you're doing this, though.

These people can trigger a lot of emotions, so it's important to really take care of yourself, use the support systems at work for employees, and even bring this book to HR or your management team to explain what's going on (be careful though, as Eddy describes in the book, you only want to use this info to protect yourself). This is all easier said than done, I'd wake up in the middle of the night with knots in my stomach and feel scared to go to work not knowing what she'd do next.

I also have some high conflict family members, so this book has already helped me not engage or escalate drama.

You can't change these folks, tell them they're wrong, or get them to listen to reason. So save yourself years of heartache and hurt, and don't try. Just protect yourself and get on with your life.

How to protect yourself from toxic people
By Maeri
Bill Eddy's It's All Your Fault is a must-have book for anyone (and that is most of us) who have what he calls High Conflict People in our lives. What makes this book so valuable is that it isn't a psychology book, even though he does briefly write about the origins of the personality disorders that HCPs suffer from. This book is about how to protect yourself from becoming sucked into drama, distorted feelings and paranoia that HCPs bring into our lives. The examples of HCPs that Eddy writes about are those we encounter in legal and business settings. HCPs waste vast amounts of taxpayer money through frivolous and bizarre litigation and can cripple businesses and demoralize their fellow employees with their angry and manipulative behavior. Eddy's advice seems counter-intuitive; he suggests listening to their complaints with what he calls E.A.R., that is Empathy, Attention and Respect. Anything less simply confirms their self-image of themselves as victims, makes their behavior worse and opens us up to being what he calls a target of blame on the HCPs part. We also risk getting sucked into the HCPs drama and taking their side and becoming a negative advocate and unwittingly making a bad situation worse. Eddy wisely writes that HCPs cannot tolerate the slightest amount of criticism and nothing we can do will change them. This is great advice. Other books about dealing with personality-disordered people suggest that we have the capacity to change them and frankly, it's absolutely futile. All we can do is steer clear of them. Eddy also suggests a communication style he calls B.I.F.F. This means keeping our communications with HCPs Brief, Informative, Friendly and Firm and establishing strong boundaries with them (since they are incapable of establishing boundaries themselves). This is an invaluable book, clearly and concisely written, and thank you Bill Eddy for making your experience available to us!

Great Help for dealing with tough people
By Steve Econ
Chances are some time in your life you'll encounter a high conflict person (HCP). An HCP will take things you say and misinterpret them, blame you for everything and can easily convince others that you are off your rocker. Oh, you've experienced this too?

Bill Eddy is the president and co-founder of the High Conflict Institute. He is an attorney, therapist, mediator and public speaker. He provides seminars on mental health issues for judges, attorneys and mediators.

This book is incredibly powerful for three reasons. First, Bill takes all of the psychological terms and makes them understandable to the common man. Then he describes high conflict behavior in a way that makes it easy to identify. Lastly he tells lots of true stories -- making the concepts easy to grasp.

Bill Eddy doesn't tell you how to "beat" the other person in an argument. His whole focus is to help you understand what drives the high conflict person and how to protect yourself and live without lowering yourself to destructive behavior.

Here are few of the key points Bill covers in the "Understanding HCP" section:

-Don't take their personal attacks personally -- it's more about them revealing their hurt and weaknesses than it is about you.
-Don't get involved in retaliating and giving them negative feedback, it just feeds the fire of anger and escalates the situation.
-Don't become a negative advocate. High conflict people have a way of sucking you into their problems and way of thinking. We need to set firm, yet loving boundaries.

In the second half of the book he gives plenty of practical, actionable advice.

Whether you're dealing with an angry teen, spouse or ex-spouse, sibling, neighbor, co-worker or boss, the illustrations and real-life stories Bill Eddy shares will equip you to deal more effectively in these situations. This is not a quick fix book -- we're talking about changing our natural inclination to defend and attack when hurt -- but it is a real eye opener and will lead to long term changes in thinking and behaving.

Both Annette and I have read this book and referred to it time and again as we run into High Conflict People in our lives.
