Seems like it was written for an outdated version of the AWS site that is served to old clients

There's something you need to be aware about this book if you're new to AWS. It seems that it is either outdated (improvable given that it was released just a couple of days ago, but maybe they started to be write it years ago and released just now..) or it was written with an outdated version of the AWS site that is served to old AWS clients, which would be understandable if you read the authors bio at the beginning but it's an unforgivable editing oversight since the reader isn't warned about this. I'm just starting but there have been several assumptions made in the book that are just weird. For example they keep telling you to choose either EC2-VPC or EC2-Classic but EC2-Classic isn't available for new clients anymore and they don't tell you this in the book.

So far it's a good book and I will update this score when I finish reading it or find another way to contact the authors (I found no contact information regarding errata listed in the book). I was waiting to finish the book before posting but I thought I should let everyone know before everything else is drowned out by the 5 stars reviews written by people that haven't finished reading it either.

Good as reference, lot of questions, some details to improve though

Cons:
- I have to agree with one of the reviews above, there are things that are outdated or even discontinued, seems they wrote few chapters long ago and others just a month ago.
- In my opinion something worth to mention is the way they wrote the Security chapter (12). This was rather confusing if you compare with the rest of the book, e.g. they mention a service, and instead to highlight the security features use two paragraphs to describe the service and how works, advantages, etc. ( when this was already explained in previous chapters), may be good to refresh your knowledge, although in my case make me lost focus a bit. Some parts on this chapter are literally a "copy&paste" of the AWS security whitepaper, maybe that is the reason. Even in the summary part they also do the same a bit, Exam Essentials are OK though.
- The exercises are too simple or too generic, with not much explanation and referring to amazon manuals.

Pros:
- One value of this book is that it comes with the exams and a fair amount of questions.
- Is a good complement to study or to get into AWS
- Most of the book is a good digested version of whitepapers and official documentation
- The fact to be the "official study guide" wrote by some people related to the exam may give you some piece of mind when going to the test :)

About the Author

John Lannon is Professor Emeritus and former Director of Writing at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, where he developed the undergraduate major in professional writing and later co-developed the M.A. program in professional writing. He has also taught at Cape Cod Community College, University of Idaho, Southern Vermont College, and University of Strasbourg. He has authored and coauthored five major textbooks in business communication, rhetoric, and technical communication, book reviews, filmstrips, and environmental documents and instructional software. He is the recipient of an NDEA Fellowship and Fulbright Lectureship. He holds a B.S., M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. His initial training and work was in biomedical science and technology with the USAF. He has served as a communications consultant for various companies and government institutions.  He worked seven years in medical laboratories.

 

Laura J. Gurak is professor and founding chair of the Department of Writing Studies at the University of Minnesota, where she teaches courses in technical writing and digital communication. She holds an M.S. in technical communication and a Ph.D. in communication and rhetoric from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. She is author of two books from Yale University Press, one of which was the first book-length study of online social actions. Gurak is also co-editor of several edited collections and author on numerous conference presentations and papers. She is a recipient of the Society for Technical Communication’s Outstanding Article award. Gurak has authored and coauthored five textbooks in technical communication published by Pearson. She has worked as a software developer, technical writer, and communications consultant for various companies and organizations.

Chomsky matters. So does the Amazon/Audible choice of narrators. They blew that one.

It's not fair of me to knock the importance of Chomsky but that's what averaging reviews will do. The fact it this review is simply that the work was compiled and presented in such a profoundly dry and clinical manner that it was almost unbearable to a non-linguist. Really this is me calling out Audible/Amazon for picking someone more boring than Ben Stein to read the audiobook. I literally used it to fall asleep at night.

Good overview of Chomsky's work

This is a collection of some of Chomsky's most influential essays and articles, covering a wide range of topics from the role of intellectuals in the US, US foreign policy, Israel/Palestine, Anarchism, social movements, and a sampling of his linguistics work. Chomsky is one of the most profound and insightful social critics of our time, and this is a decent overview of his work.

Since some of the essays are excerpts of chapters in his various books, some readers familiar with Chomsky may find it repetitive. For someone completely new to Chomsky, I would recommend "Understanding Power" as a much more comprehensive, readable place to start.

Too Much Politics and Not Enough Linguistics

Mr. Chomsky is brilliant, blindingly articulate, and deserves an immense amount of attention and respect,
but for my money any volume entitled Essential Chomsky should strike a much more even balance between his linguistic work and political work.

I do not feel that this book is sufficiently representative of the likelihood that the evolution of language in primates, the impact of language on the social strucures of Homo Sapiens, and the monkey politics of our present day American condition are essentially all 'of a piece' in this great intellect.

That's my opinion, anyway...

Huge improvements over previous ed. An absolute must-have.

This is the "Problems Book" that goes with the sixth edition of Molecular Biology of the Cell. Doesn't sound all that exciting does it? But actually the problems book is just as fascinating and informative as the textbook it's a companion for. And there have been enormous improvements over the previous (fifth) edition here too. I've been working my way through the new edition of MBoC and loving it, and just got around to taking a look at this new problems book and WOW.

The problems typically start out with an interesting fact and then ask you a question about it that will require some creative thought. The background information provided for each question is often fascinating and goes into all sorts of areas with detail that there isn't room for in the main textbook. Here's an example question from p.6:

"1-45: Giardiasis is an acute form of gastroenteritis caused by the protozoan parasite Giardia lambila. Giardia is a fascinating eukaryote; it contains a nucleus but no mitochondria and no recognizable endoplasmic reticulum or Golgi apparatus--one of the very rare examples of such a cellular organization among eukaryotes. This organization might have arisen because Giardia is an ancient lineage that separated from the rest of eukaryotes before mitochondria were acquired and internal membranes were developed. Or it might be a stripped-down version of a more standard eukaryote that has lost these structures because they are not necessary in the parasitic lifestyle it has adopted. How might you use nucleotide sequence comparisons to distinguish between these alternatives?"

In the previous fifth edition, a CD-ROM was provided with the book that included PDF chapters of the answers for each problem chapter in the book. This was inconvenient at best. But now for the sixth edition all the problems AND all the answers are printed in the book. You get over 400 pages of problems followed by another 400+ pages of answers, so you can read and think about a problem and then flip to the answer to read their explanation. This gives the printed version of the book a significant advantage over the Kindle version in my option, since it's much easier to flip back and forth in a physical book than it is in the Kindle reader app (if only they could provide active links between the questions and answers...)

The answers are as extensive as the questions, and provide lots of additional interesting information, history, etc. The answer to question 1-45 above takes up half a page and includes a paper reference.

There are several styles of problem. Each section contains one ore more of the following: basic vocabulary (match the term to its definition), True/False questions, Thought Problems (as the example above, and there are lots of these), Calculations that ask you to figure out some (usually fairly simple) quantitative value to illustrate some fact about the spatial or temporal world of the cell, Data Handling questions that present information in terms of experiments and then ask related questions, Medical Links questions that connect the basic science more to human clinical practice, and new MCAT style questions that consist of a passage of text followed by questions.

There are plenty of illustrations and diagrams, some repeated from the textbook and others original, in both the problems and answers sections.

The book is now printed in color and this greatly improves the usability of the book and its figures, and it substantially improves the look and feel of the book overall.

If you want to see more before you decide to buy you can get the first 47 pages or so via the Kindle Preview option if you have a tablet or PC/Mac Kindle reader app. The answers are all in the second half of the book so the preview will just show you more questions as well as the front-matter of the book. The Kindle version is a "Print Replica" so it's an exact reproduction of the physical book (like a PDF).

Besides the Problem Book's own questions and answers, it also includes answers to all the end of chapter questions from the main textbook.

This book is as much a source of new knowledge as it is a way to test your knowledge of the subject matter in the textbook. You can think of it as another nearly 1,000 pages of fascinating molecular biology presented in a Socratic style. Like the textbook itself it's extremely well written and very approachable, and is one of those rare "wow" book experiences.

It's great if you want to learn and think more about cell biology (and life in general), as well as its applications to human health, and even if you've just been assigned this as an additional book for a class using the main textbook then I think you'll really enjoy it.

Although this is very well put together, I should point out that if you already have the first addition as well as the "Black Belt Krav Maga" book you have all the techniques in this book. Basically it's the original "Complete Krav Maga" plus about 20 techniques from "Black Belt Krav Maga". I should've waited to preview it first because I already own all the books by Darren Levine.

Really Good Technique Book

First of all, let me say that this is a five star book. The reason this review gives it four stars is because the second edition did not add much new content from the first, and it all contained in another of Levine's books, which is titled something along the lines of 'Black Belt Krav Maga Techniques'. Regardless, this is an amazing reference book for Krav Maga. The photos capture the essence of each technique, and the written descriptions are clear, concise, and informative. The book is organized by belt level, then further divided by situation, so navigating to where you want to get to is easy. The index is also appreciated, since this book really does contain a lot of techniques(250+). Obviously, you will get more out of this is you have a professional teacher, but this is a great book for someone interested, getting started, or is experienced in Krav Maga.

A fantastic reference book!

This is a fantastic resource for Krav Maga students. I started studying Krav Maga and Kali about 4 months ago and I purchased this to help me review the Krav Maga techniques I learned in class. It's a phenomenal book; it's very well organized and the pictures, although black and white, are clear and capture the right "moment" when demonstrating a technique. (Having also studied Karate, Aikido, and Judo, I've read a bunch of other books of this type and it always annoys me when the pictures fail to capture the essence of a technique, but luckily that's not the case here). The techniques in the book are organized according to belt or level - I'm probably too new to appreciate it - but I'm sure this would be very helpful to others. The writing is exceptionally clear and to the point.

There is a brief introduction but otherwise this gets right into the content. Overall, I think this will be a great resource for me, a worthwhile addition to my library, and I am totally happy with my purchase.

I completely recommend this book to you and I hope you find this review helpful. Good luck training!
